A Sheltered Life Story
Growing up, I lead a sheltered life. Not monastic mind you, just sheltered. I spent my summers at a camp in Northern Ontario, my winters at an all-male boarding school. My knowledge of sex came from stories in magazines, and outrageous stories told in the dorm rooms and around the campfires. Any social interactions with women were limited, structured, and chaperoned. There were very few girlfriends to use the term loosely. The summer of my seventeenth birthday, things changed.

Unable to find a home and acceptance on Earth, an intrepid band of misplaced youth seek out their ancestral home among the stars. Unfortunately, their reception is not what they were hoped. The home they discover is a hostile place, involved in a huge interstellar war with an hostile alien species. Viewed as untrusted interlopers, they search for a place in a universe with no use for them, with little place to turn for assistance.

Joe Hancock works as an agency nurse in the winter, and as a sailor during the season. He's an occasional attender at church, but then he finds an unconscious girl on the way home in the small hours of the morning. Life will never be quite the same again. The rape/non-consent is off stage and not detailed.
