Brad was sitting in the library when two girls started to read the personals in the local paper. Their giggles caught his attention, so he glanced over to see what they were reading. It was an ad for a man looking for a companion on a international trip. “It sounds like he just wants someone willing to put out for him while he’s on his trip,” one of the girls said. A few years later that memory came back to him because he was now in a position to take a trip and wanted to test his theory.

A husband and step-father makes a wish on Halloween that he have a baby with the woman he loves - the wish goes amiss because he loves, and has loved, more than one woman. Changes occur throughout many lives as the wish calls his loved ones to him and his growing family.

The story of Jack Mathews and his marriage and adventures with Shirley began. This book continues with the story of Jack and Shirley and their community, Preservation, as well as continuing the story of Protection.
