I called my troops to attention and turned to face the Union Major, who was in charge of the Union Company, about the same size as mine. Before yesterday, he was the enemy. I saluted and waited for the next order. “Major James Giffords of the Confederate States Army, you have given us your word you would surrender your troops, your arms, and what ammunition you have.”
Lt Tony Nash RNVR was badly wounded on the return from Dunkirk whilst in command of a commandeered paddle steamer. He was awarded the DSC for gallantry, but he was temporarily unfit for sea service when he left hospital. He was then attached to a special anti-spy unit searcing out Nazi sympathisers whio had entetred Britain under cover of the evacuation.
