What he uncovers is a plot to take control of the planet, but during his getaway his spaceship is shot down. Stranded on the planet's moon and with only his survival suit at his disposal, he must find a way back to civilization, all while trying to deal with an unwitting alien companion.

The story of Jack Mathews and his marriage and adventures with Shirley began. This book continues with the story of Jack and Shirley and their community, Preservation, as well as continuing the story of Protection.

I had this story after "Return to Cala", but I realized that it's best told before "Return" and I hope future and past readers agree.
