Unable to find a home and acceptance on Earth, an intrepid band of misplaced youth seek out their ancestral home among the stars. Unfortunately, their reception is not what they were hoped. The home they discover is a hostile place, involved in a huge interstellar war with an hostile alien species. Viewed as untrusted interlopers, they search for a place in a universe with no use for them, with little place to turn for assistance.

A Swarm Cycle Story
Caleb, in his brainship named "Cheval Jaune", starts a tour of the Milky Way’s Confederacy. How will the various species respond to this metal-encased human? Familiarity with the Swarm Cycle and the author’s previous stories is strongly encouraged, as detailed character descriptions from "Caleb and Cheval Jaune" are mostly not repeated. A young officer in an alien planet’s military space force is sent with two other space explorers back to the supposed origin of mankind a millennium or so after it was thought to be decimated. Alpha, they called it. Due to extenuating circumstances, when she arrived on Alpha, or Earth as we know it, she was alone. Not knowing, and even fearing what she would encounter upon landing, it turned out pretty well. Pretty well for her and for what was left of Earth’s severely diminished population.
