Happy Independence Day for all us Americans! I decided to upload chapter 8 a day early.
In it, we learn more about Richard's extraction. Smokey learns about Richard's new harem. Plotting begins to get folks out of California.
And why does Melody like her binkies so much?
Tomorrow's chapter bears explanation. Aroslav was keying off my first ever story that the Sa'arm would be fought by a scorched Earth strategy, and he knew I was writing the story now under way. He needed a character to transfer that technique to his planet in Assassin.
I had other plans for Richard and Smokey, so I came up with Marcie and Crazy Edie. Though I needed them for a bit role in this story, they took on a life of their own in the next chapter, but mostly exist as a set up for that and other stories.
I had a lot of fun with them, and though the chapter is short, I hope you do too.
In the chapter posting tomorrow, Smokey gets a call and heads to California. One of her favorite pilots give her a lift in a one-of-a-kind warbird.
FIRST: If you read my end note, you'll see that one of my editors was pcbondman. GraySapien just posted that he passed away. Warren and I worked together editing and proofing Paige Hawthorne's stories and with him as a valued editor of my stories. I will miss him, his advice, and especially his humor.
Chapter Five: I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire! will post tomorrow morning. Richard and Smokey rescue kids from their burning home. Who is injured?
Chapter 4 is in the queue to post tomorrow morning.
Groups of Americans disproportionately affected by the Sa'arm advance south from Canada are Native American tribes. Because of a fortuitous rescue of Native American children, Smokey and Richard are designated as representatives and intermediaries to negotiate appropriate assistance for the tribes.
This chapter is shorter than most, but longer chapters follow.
