Before writing my profile I read the profiles of some of my favourite reviewers. I agree with everything “manddscott” has said in his profile - I’m a tough marker and a grammar pedant. I also insist on a plot-driven story, and enjoy some sex, where it is appropriate.
There are so many stories out there to choose from, I tend to be picky about which ones I read. I rarely read stories scored below 7.5, and rely on high reviewers’ ratings for unscored stories.
My subject matter tastes are rather pedestrian - coming-of-age, do-overs, science fiction and space operas, and stories of realistic characters in realistic settings. I also enjoy satire, irony and humour.
I stay away from BDSM and overt violence, zombies, vampires and other ridiculous beings, ESP, mind control and other magical powers.
I’m a Canadian, but have travelled extensively and lived overseas for a few years. I’m retired from a white collar, executive career, but grew up in a lower-middle class home - I was the first in the family to go to university and helped out in the family corner store from the age of 8 (seriously).
I’ll review stories in a positive vein, but I won’t pull punches where they are deserved, and always try to be helpful to the author. I assume they are trying their hardest to entertain us, and we owe them the courtesy of treating their output with respect any time we refer to them publicly. If I don’t like a story or an author, I won’t write a review.
