To provide the services available on the site in a reliable manner, there is a need to use certain technologies and there is a need for user registration. The registration is free, but requires a valid email address, in order for us to send you your password.
You can preview the site without registering. However, access to complete stories, voting, and many other things requires a free membership.
To register you need to pick a user ID and submit a valid email address. A password will be emailed to you at the address that you submit. The password is required to access the site, and without it you'll only get a preview of the site. Storiesonline is a dynamic site, which means that many of the pages that you will be accessing are updated every time you access them. So if your browser is caching pages for a long time (keeping a copy of them on your hard drive and accessing it from there instead of the site to give you faster browsing experience), then those pages won't be updated properly, and you'll think that the site is not being updated at all.
You need to set your browser's cache to fetch a new version of pages all the time. Consult your browser's help pages on how to do that.
There is a limit on the number of stories that you can access in any 24 hour period, in the free area of the site it is 16 complete stories per 24 hours.
Due to those limits, you must turn off any Web-Surfing accelerators and pre-fetching applications, such as the pre-fetching feature of some browsers when accessing the site (offline browsing is one such feature). Otherwise, if those applications or features are active, the limit of your download will be reached after the first search results page that you look at.
Also there is a limit of 1 vote per story. Once you vote for a story, you won't be able to vote again for a long time, even for serial stories, so use those votes wisely.
You have 48 hours to start using the site after registering. If you don't log in within 48 hours after registering, the site will assume that you made a mistake in the registration information and you never received your log-in information message. In that case the server will delete the registration allowing you to register again using correct information.
There is no time limit on your account as long as you're using it. However, if an account is inactive for more than 90 days, then it is considered 'dead' and it is removed from the database. In that case you need to register again to access the site. So just make sure that you log-in at least once every three months to keep your account alive.
If you're using Netscape 4.x for browsing the site, it will work, however, it will look simply ugly. The site is compliant with web standards and should work with all browsers, however, browsers as old or older than Netscape 4.8 aren't capable of displaying the site as well as the newer browsers.
