The story begins on Earth but shifts to the Empire in a different Galaxy. That Galaxy faced Intergalactic War over a hundred thousand years ago. Thousands of years ago the Empire seeded people on Earth.
Only one old frail man is selected to return on a Battleship to the Empire.

On the verge of old age and entering an old aged home Jason's 80 year old wife suicides after she is diagnosed with dementia and he faces murder charges. He is asked to travel to the Empire which is 65000 years ahead to help his sick great grandfather run his Duchy. He travels on a battleship but faces new enemies and lovers but finally has to decide if he can face his nemesis.
Close to death after being shot through the heart, Jason is taken by his fleet who are making a desperate attempt to help the Empire fight off a surprise attack from their old enemies the Mob. They fight vicious battles as Jason struggles to recover and eventually are forced to decide if they will confront the monster in its lair. Jason once again faces death as his enemy hits back. Can he find allies to help find his hidden enemy? Nearly all is lost in closely fought battles.
Finally reaching the Empire after subduing the Mob, Jason faces assassination and a complex recovery before he attempts to rescue his Great Grandfather then enters University where he faces repeated threats and adversity before facing impending Intergalactic War.
