How many times have we read in the news about a hospital in Africa being overrun by terrorists, people killed and captives being taken. It is big news for a couple of days, then it is forgotten. Here is the first of four stand-alone stories about what happens to those taken prisoner. As usual, I did not mark all the codes.

Rose is middle-aged, seemingly sexless, and gardening is one of the many interests she has to fill her life without a man. One particularly hot day at the garden center she comes across a plant she hasn't seen before-- a plant which is reputed to have certain effects when ingested.
A rough tale of a young teenage girl whose parents are arrested and she is put into a foster home. She doesn't accept her circumstances well and acts up. After being moved through several homes her social worker removes all traces of her from the system and delivers her to the home of a friend and that friend's two sons.
