A story in the The Farmer's Daughter Universe
Kevin Butcher, a former U. S. Marine, is trying to finish college while working as a contractor. He takes a job several counties distant and rents a room from a local Mennonite farmer. Of course, the farmer has an attractive daughter. But the son of a local gangster wants the farmer's daughter and will do anything to have her. Lincoln Steele comes to the aid of a former girlfriend whose son is said to have committed a high school shooting. She knows he is innocent, but everything points to him being the mass murderer. In the small southern Arizona town, Steele encounters corrupt law enforcement, drug trafficking, sex slavery, extortion, and murder on both sides of the border. He gets to the truth and makes the guilty pay.
The topic is "The End of the Affair." My problem is that everybody from Ovid to Henry Miller has had something to say about that - not to mention a few million folks on this site. So, I took a slightly different interpretation of "the end" here. My hero makes a bad choice. But he has decent instincts and with a little help from an unlikely source he eventually learns how to be a good person. Some of you might find this a bit allegorical.
