'Trading Friends' brings with it a fairly decent concept. A teenager who can't get a date, and his sister who gets too many dates with jerks, agree to each bring three of their friends together and form a dating and sex circle, allowing them to each find a regular boyfriend/girlfriend, as well as a circle of other partners to swing and swap with on a regular basis. The brother and sister do eventually engage in incest as part of their games, and a few outsiders are occasionally brought in on the fun, and even some of their parents join in.

Sounds like a fun idea, to be sure, but the story possibilities are a bit limited. While the sexual escapades are fun to read, there's not a lot of conflict to keep the story going, especially when any source of potential conflict--a disapproving parent, a school jerk who thinks the girls are his property--gets resolved almost as soon as it comes up. The story could have been more engaging and gone on for longer if these kinds of problems were more drawn out.

Also, for a story that juggles a lot of characters, there isn't a lot to distinguish them. We're given their names, detailed descriptions of them when they're first introduced, and some brief descriptions of their interests, but that's about it. It becomes hard to keep track of who's who, as everyone talks the same and largely acts the same. There's one character that we're TOLD talks with a stutter, but this isn't shown in the dialogue, "out of respect for him." This was the wrong way to go. If his stutter were actually reflected in the dialogue, that would have gone a long way toward setting this character apart from all the others.

Which brings me to the dialogue. Nobody speaks naturally or casually; they all tend to get longwinded and verbose in practically every conversation they have. The dialogue tends to come off as more like something someone would write in a letter or email message than something they would say in actual conversation.

Still, the story works as a fun little diversion, and is at least good enough if you're looking for something to get you off. You can come for the sex, and... well, mostly stay for that, since there's not much else to stay for. It's a fun little story that, while not as dramatic or engaging as it might have been given some different decisions, is still fun.

Trading Friends is one of those stories that demands a sequel. I've not yet checked 'Sagacious'' page to see if there's one there, but I'm definitely going to!

Trading Friends is quite a saga, a saga of sexuality that draws you into the story and demands that you read it to the end. Though there are a few technical faux pas, there's nothing serious enough to spoil the story. I do think it could have been written in a manner that prevented the reiteration of large portions of the tale, but even that didn't distract the reader too much. I found the dialogue a little stilted at times too, contractions, such as 'I'll' and 'we'll', would have made it flow better, and read more realistically.

If polyamory is your bag, you're in for a treat as the main protagonists pursue a philosophy that I would be happy to live with, if only I were forty years younger! All in all, a warm cuddly story that's well worth reading! Enjoy!
