The characters in this tale are twins and orphans and the victims of an uncaring foster system and uncaring mercenary foster 'parents'. He is hugely protective of his beautiful sister who has been blind since birth.
As they really only have each other to rely on they are closer than other siblings might be. Then 3 ne'er-do-wells accost them in a shopping mall intending harm to him and degradation and more to his sister.
You can read the tale to see how he reacts and what that leads to.
This story is part of the Swarm Cycle, a huge series of stories where the Earth is contacted by AIs (Artificial Intelligence machines) on behalf of an alien race, the Darjee. The Sa'arm, a tripedal race with some physical resemblance to a cross between a mushroom and a lizard but with a hive mind, is sweeping across this galactic arm toward the centre. They communicate by some sort of ESP and ignore any race that does not. In their path is the Confederacy, a Galactic civilization that universally practices nonviolence -- and Earth.
This is a great little tale and is a fun read. I have read just about all of Reluctant-Sir's stories over the years and recommend them to you.
I have loved the Swarm Cycle stories since the first one was released back in 2007 and there are well over 200 tales in the series so far by a wide range of authors and a very diverse range of story themes. They are all available here: Swarm Cycle Universe
