Stories in this universe are set in a misogynistic version of the U.S. where the 34th Amendment to the Constitution legalized non-hereditary slavery. People, mostly beautiful young women, are traded at auction houses like livestock and treated even worse, "voluntarily" indentured to pay off a defaulted debt or to evade jail - and in some cases just because of stupidity and misplaced trust. Getting officially "graded" at such an auction house for sexual attractiveness and "slave heat" after suffering rigorous training and abuse has become a rite of passage for young women, but one that all too often ends in enslavement for the naive girls. But in a world filled with cruel punishments and intense sex, their acceptance of their new role is usually only a matter of time.
Sarah Burley has always tried to stay away from the horrible practice of legalized slavery the 34th Amendment had brought around, but a short moment of insanity opens the door for an illicit affair, and things somehow spiral out of her control. A few more moments of insanity, and our heroine might end up on the auction block like cattle. Can she keep her whits about her long enough? A story of insane little moments, dark desires, ruthless people and cruel betrayals.
In a dystopian, misogynistic world that legalized contractual slavery, society has embraced this concept, and the evaluation as a potential slave through so-called "gradings" has become a contest and a rite of passage for young women. Pretty Lucy finds this practice abhorrent, but she tries so hard to live up to the expectations of her rich and worldly fiance. But the heart, as we know, is often a shoddy advisor, and bad things tend to happen to the people who least deserve it...
