A Story in the The Hunter Family Universe
Caroline Stanhope finds herself both comforted and beset by members of her late husband's family. They include a deranged Earl, a disinherited eldest brother, a sister who has eloped to America, and another brother off fighting the War of 1812 as an officer in the Royal Navy.
This novel preceeds "Audry", and describes the formation of the Steele family. Covering several years, it is much more than a "coming of age" romp. As always, the sex advances the plot, and is never the reason for the plot. This is the story of a rich "eastern establishment" girl who marries a ranch boy from the wilds of Oregon.
It was supposed to be a quick trip. Up and back for a simple soccer game, but when Dave's car broke down, he and Dick were stranded with only their darling virgin daughters for company. Then one of her friends needed the same thing. And another friend after that, until Bobby was satisfying the needs of five women. That's a lot for a seventeen-year-old kid to handle. But maybe his best friend could help him out. And that was just the beginning.
Beth is content with the life she's rebuilding, it's not exciting but she feels secure. A visit by an old lover is wildly satisfying, but you can't build your world around passion and impulse -- or can you?
Readers from both sites suggested that I port some of my better received stories over here. And who doesn't love a do-over? Especially if you can clean up a slightly buggy original and incorporate reader feedback? I can't tell you why I got off on my Hemingway kick - probably lack of creativity on my part. But, I can't think of any story that would be harder to adapt than the Old Man and the Sea. So of course I had to try it. I hope you enjoy it - DT
