Incest Sex Story: A girl who barely knew her dead mother teaches herself to become her: the voice, the walk, the way she went first at everything. She studies the dead woman until she can be the wife her father is still grieving. And he lets her. She'll do anything to reach the mother she lost, even to the last place that woman is still alive: in the hands of the man who loved her most. Before you start. This is one of the warmer things I’ve written. Most of what I do runs cold and cruel, and this is the outlier, the one with real tenderness in it, people who reach each other instead of only using each other, and something close to grace by the end. It’s about the closest to a happy ending you’ll get from me. Not a tidy one, I don’t write those, but the ache in it is the ache of people finding something real in the last place they should have found it.
One honest word, because a tag on this book might scare off the very readers it’s for. Yes, there’s a rape in it. A single one, and it happens to a supporting character, not to the narrator. It does not break her, and it isn’t where her story ends. Her thread is one of the ones that settles somewhere gentle by the close. So if that tag had you braced for a book that guts you and stays cruel, that isn’t where this one goes. Come on in.
