Chapter 17: The Line

Incest Sex Story: Chapter 17: The Line - A girl who barely knew her dead mother teaches herself to become her: the voice, the walk, the way she went first at everything. She studies the dead woman until she can be the wife her father is still grieving. And he lets her. She'll do anything to reach the mother she lost, even to the last place that woman is still alive: in the hands of the man who loved her most. A first-person descent into grief, willful blindness, and taking a place that was never hers. Complete.

It got harder to hold. There was a night in February when he had me under him, saying it into my hair, put a baby in you, and I lay there with my mouth two seconds from going down on him the way I always did, and I didn’t want to. For one long breath I didn’t want to move, didn’t want to be careful, wanted to just lie still and let him. I made myself do it — slid down and took him and finished him safe — but I lay awake after with how close it had been, how much of me had wanted to let it happen.

And then came the night the line finally went.

It started like the others — him deep in me, holding still, saying it into my hair, that he wanted to put a baby in me. The room was close and hot the way it got by then, thick with candle wax and the smell of the two of us, my back stuck to the sheet. It was a don’t-day, one of the worst of them, and I’d known it walking down the stairs. I’d meant to do what I always did.

But I was scared that night. I’d counted twice and hated it twice. And when he pressed deep and started working toward finishing, I didn’t slide down him the way I’d meant to. The word came up out of me before I’d decided to let it — I meant it — my face turned away into the dark, and it came out low: “no. Not tonight. I can’t tonight, we can’t—”

He held.

Then a huff of breath against my neck, warm, and it took me a second to place it. A laugh. Low, and pleased, a sound I’d never heard him make down there, and it dropped through my stomach cold. I’d said a real thing. A scared thing. And he’d laughed.

“No?” His voice came out slow now, changed. His hand found both my wrists and gathered them and drew them up over my head in one motion, no fumbling for it, like his body already knew the way. He pushed up into me to the root, till the head of him nudged that sore place at the very end, and my breath caught. “You never want it.” Held there, deep. “You fight me every time.” His mouth dragged to my ear. “And every time I make you. And every time you love it.” Then, almost soft: “Say no again.”

It was how easy it came out of him. He wasn’t reaching for any of it — the words came too smooth, too sure, like he’d said them a hundred times before to someone who said them back. This had happened before. Not to me. And I knew whose place I’d fallen into in the dark — knew it cold, without once letting the name come up.

“No,” I said. Small. And I felt it land in him — felt him swell and push, felt my one scared word go through him like a pin pulled — and my stomach turned over, because it was true, it was really her, and even as it turned, lower down, some part of me clenched around him and pushed back and wanted.

I kept waiting to feel sick, and it wouldn’t come. That was the worst of it — every time I reached for it, it slid away, because he was moving in me now, slow and deep and sure, and every no I said only wound him tighter, and that wound me tighter, till I couldn’t tell anymore whether I was fighting him or begging him.

“I can’t. Please—” and this time it cracked all the way open, and it didn’t come out in her voice. Everything I’d ever said in that room I’d said as Robin — the low pitch, the little up-tilt off the discs, the voice he came down there to hear. This came out as me. My own real voice, young and scared and plain, the day and the danger breaking it open, not one thread of her left in it: “please, I mean it, I can’t tonight—”
