Chapter 7: The First Words

Incest Sex Story: Chapter 7: The First Words - A girl who barely knew her dead mother teaches herself to become her: the voice, the walk, the way she went first at everything. She studies the dead woman until she can be the wife her father is still grieving. And he lets her. She'll do anything to reach the mother she lost, even to the last place that woman is still alive: in the hands of the man who loved her most. A first-person descent into grief, willful blindness, and taking a place that was never hers. Complete.

Claire’s hand was too tight on my arm the whole way back to the far room, and that was the first thing that told me this one was different.

The room past the laundry side had a mattress on the floor, made up with real sheets and a blanket turned down at the corner, like somebody had gotten it ready for sleeping. There were candles here too, but fewer, and lower, and set off on the far side by the laundry, so the bed itself lay in a dark you could have hidden anything in. The music didn’t reach this far. Just the quiet, and Claire next to me breathing not quite even.

“This one’s different,” she said. Low. It was the most she’d said to me down here in all the weeks of it. “It’s not like the others. He’ll—” She stopped. Her jaw did the thing it does. “You don’t have to do anything. You let him. And you don’t talk. Whatever happens, you don’t talk, you don’t make a sound, you don’t—” and she stopped again and pressed her mouth shut on the rest of it, the way she does, the whole back half of the sentence going back down unsaid.

“Okay,” I said.

She tied the blindfold on last. Her fingers were cold and they weren’t steady, and when the knot was set she stayed a second with her hands on the sides of my head, holding it the way you hold something you’re afraid of dropping, and she let out one breath, close and shaky, near my ear. Then her weight came off the mattress and her steps crossed the floor and a door pulled shut, and I was alone on a made bed in the dark, waiting for a man I had decided, weeks ago, on a staircase, was Ravi.

I lay there and made myself be Robin. That was the whole of what I’d come down those stairs for, every time, and I held onto it now — that this was the far end of it, the thing she’d done, the one that made her the most alive person any of them ever saw, and I was about to have it, in her house, in her dark. I did not put a face on anyone. I was very good at that by now.

He came in quiet.

I heard the door, and bare feet on the floor, and the mattress went down under a knee, and then he was lowering himself alongside me — slow, careful, nothing I’d braced for. No grabbing. He gathered me in against him, an arm coming under me and a hand going flat and warm and wide across my back, and he pulled me into the whole length of him and held me. Just held me. Like it was what he’d come down the stairs for. Like the holding was worth more than anything past it.

And he was familiar.

I knew the holding. I knew the size of the hands and the warmth of him and the careful, patient way he moved, because I’d felt all of it before, on the other nights, in the other dark, and I’d kept it faceless every time, and I kept it faceless now — but something low in me had gone still and strange, the way you go still when a smell walks you into a room you can’t remember ever being in.

His hand moved over me slow, down my back and along my side and up the line of me again, learning me, like there was no hurry anywhere in the world. He found the hem of my shirt and slid his palm under it onto bare skin, and I felt him go still for a second at the warmth of me, like it undid him a little, and then he kept on, spreading his hand over my ribs, my stomach, the small of my back, and pressing his mouth into my shoulder and my neck and the hinge of my jaw in between. Soft. Unhurried. A man touching a woman not because he wanted something off her quick, but because being let this close was the whole of it.
