I first read this story a few years back, and when it popped up on the random selection, I was pleased to have the chance to read it again. It’s a sequel to ‘Adore’ but works just fine on its own. I remembered the well-written and fast-paced romance of the first few chapters, telling how two cousins, brought up together on an Oregon horse and Angus cattle ranch, become young lovers, break up and get back together. It’s well written with pathos and humor, with genuine knowledge and love of the Oregon landscape, horses and cattle. Fair warning, if you hate cousin incest stories, don’t touch this.
What I had forgotten was how the story turns. Audry and Rob take the equine world by storm, but through no fault of their own make some seriously amoral social climbing enemies on the way. It isn’t a feel-good tale by any means. It ought really to have a ‘Caution’ label because it takes such a dark twist. To be honest, it gets REAL nasty. The feud simmers on with both sides taking losses, until the bad guys make it ultra-personal. The revenge chapters are exceptionally violent, and some readers won’t like them at all. If torture and killing are not your thing, again, please avoid.
BUT, even though I feel that I’ve been through an emotional wringer, I recognize that ‘Audry’ is an exceptionally powerful tale, worthy of more attention. The 700-word description of Audry’s defection is incredibly economic and effective, I wish I could write so tightly. “The Star” hasn’t posted for ten years, but his six stories all have good scores, and I’d like more people to read them.
