Music as a significant part of the story

hiltonls16 ๐Ÿšซ

I have recently read Ryan Sylander's Opus One and re-read EzzyB's Chaos stories.

I have also read Melodic Redemption by Oyster50, Hatchery Road by ShadowWriter.

Are there others where music is a significant part of the story?

What about Al Steiner's "Intemperance" stories? They are about a rock band but - not having read them - I don't know how much music comes into it.

I thoroughly recommend 'Lightning in a Bottle' by Sage Mullins.

You might also try the stories of AL-Canadian and OldSarge69.

Don Lockwood's "Dance of a Lifetime"

While it's not here I would also recommend Wes Boyd's "Blue Beauty".

@AmigaClone

Don Lockwood's "Dance of a Lifetime"

I think his Rewind also has quite a bit of music.

Tree Symphony by Gina Marie Wylie (no longer here; I think it's on Amazon).

The "Chaos" series by EzzyB.

Rachel by Will Baley.

The "Mayhem" series by Colt45 is nt really centered on music, but music is a pretty large part.

Four books (dead tree) by late Anne McCaffrey:
The Ship Who Sang
The Harper Hall Trilogy(Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums)

It takes a bit of the first story to get into it, but music does play a significant role in both stories.

'Perfect Pitch' by Nigel Woodman. It's not a long story, but it's all about music.

Thanks for all the suggestions, plenty to read there.

I am familiar with Wes Boyd's work and when Blue Beauty was mentioned I remembered Hat Trick but couldn't recall the title. Re-reading those is also on the list.

I dunno. That's not really about music. It's more like it features a successful musician and has the biz as a backdrop. THere are parts of course, but seen more through the MC's uneducated eyes.

I think the real question is how much does it matter to the OP? If the backdrop and setting is what he's looking for then you are certainly right. Runaway Train is a great example.

It's not really about music and the biz, though. And it's not particularly accurate on it's own. It matches very well with Jay's slightly different than reality universe that he has been working on since Daze with it's own, internally consistent but unique views on economics, culture, race, technology, politics and... probably other stuff that I can't remember. They are all a little off but work well in his world.

If you liked Opus One you may like Ryan's Hook Lens Triology. Music plays a big part in the background.

Oh, and if memory serves me right, Ryan might be doing Opus Two 'soon'. Opus One (especially the tame first half where everyone else complains nothing happens) is my fav ever story.

Castaway by Colin Barrett

Opera singer as MC. A lot of information on the opera scene though the music is about 50/50 split with the other themes.

Also Road Trip and the sequel Crystal Clear by Wolf

The Country Music Industry is a major theme starting in the middle of the first story and continuing in the sequel.

These Girls Can Play by Dr. Paco Jones

Bob is a "retired" professional bass player looking for something to do. He receives a demo tape of an all girls "Garage Band" from a good friend and can't believe what he hears. He remembers these girls from three years prior. Follow Bob, Heather, Michelle, Maryanne, and Janell through the trials and tribulations of a rock and roll band. From forming the band all the way to the last live performance and a little beyond.

Both are about ageing rock musicians.

My stories all include a song as the chapter title, and I have tried to integrate music into the stories. I have an 'Afterward' for the Books 3-6, which contain links to U-Tube for each of these songs.

Dead tree press has John Ringo's Claws that Catch and Ghost series with, for want of a better word, theme music. He quotes songs that fit the emotions of the main character in Ghost, effectively singing his death song in battle (of course he survives after bleeding out - can't have a series when the MC dies in the first book!)

A great review here: https://hradzka.livejournal.com/199220.html

Claws that catch is straight space opera. Music is integral to the story. Playing In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida manipulates a space warp to cause a star to flare as a special effect for a concert in space.

Neither series is about growing up to play music so probably not the sort of story line that you were asking for, but different and perhaps entertaining.

oyster50 ๐Ÿšซ

Several of the stories in my Smart Girls universe feature music, but most particularly Melodic Redemption.

Music is a constant undercurrent in the Community series.

Songbirds by Jay Cantrell. Its about the personalities of a teenage band that gets a break, then gets ripped off by the industry before finally making it as adults. MC is the former member who was the creative force, but did not want to make a career out if it. Not erotica, its on Fine Stories as well as SOL.

Rhenquist's Going Home Again is on Lit and well worth a read. MC is a very successful musician, on the point of burning out, haunted by the grumpy ghost of his father and married to a cheating wife. His personal life and career boil over in a perfect storm of emotion; fight or flight kicks in and he starts driving across America, heading back home to the place and people that made him a musician in the first place.

I guess this would count. I wrote "Fun, Fun, Fun" years ago. It actually recounts the tale behind the Beach Boy's song of the same name!
