Please recommend stories where A.I. is a major plot point

junior15 ๐Ÿšซ

I've recently read some stories on Kindle Unlimited that included an AI as a major character and was wondering if there were some stories on here I had missed. I've read the series about Dhalia (spelling??) that was pretty good. There was another story/series about a guy that created an AI (or it might have been multiple AIs) that looked like comic book characters. I didn't like this one very much. I also like Fate of Terra on another site, even though it is incomplete.

I enjoy the stories where the AI is basically sentient and has a personality (but doesn't become an evil overlord) and is a part of the story. Any story recommendations like this would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Life with Alpha by Any Pseudonym was the first thing that came to my mind. Nevermind, that's the one you didn't like.

Tefler's Three Square Meals introduces a major AI character after a while.

Colin Barret A.I.

"Computers don't think, all they can do is calculate. But when does calculation become thinking?" That's is the question keypuncher Jack Heyward keeps asking himself when the system he's using suddenly starts talking back. But Jack has more problems; this system is an especially sensitive one, and he's suspected of a major security breach. And even if he, his new computer friend and his girlfriend can elude the massive manhunt, a new and more deadly peril awaits.

Very good!

I'd have to disagree with this. AI seems like an important part of the Swarm Cycle setting, but for most authors it's just a background explanation for how everything runs.

We are told that AIs have personalities, but we rarely see them. They aren't developed as characters or used as part of the story. They are simply the handwavium for how humanity is operating using alien technology without interacting with any of the aliens directly.

There are a handful of stories that use AIs the way OP wants, but you you have to sift through 300+ stories to find them.

Lumpy's 'The Sword of Jupiter' has an AI playing a major role.

Harry Carton's 'Lexi Redux' has major AI involvement too.

C...B's 'Make the Cut' stories have multiple AIs.

In dead tree, James P Hogan's The Two Faces of Tomorrow covers the painful genesis of an AI; he also has a collection of shorts, Minds, Machines & Evolution, which sounds like it should have some relevant stuff (it's too long since I read it and I can't remember any content)

Here, PT Branium's Elements of Power series has an AI as a significant character in #2&3, and more AIs in #3.

ETA correction, the AIs are in books 5 & 6, in posting #3 here, so just a smidge of AI at the end of book 5; however, you really could do with reading 1-4 (postings #1 & 2 here) first.

Vanessa Ravencroft has a series (Erica Olafson stories) that includes several AIs, including one that becomes one of Eric's friends.

While the character I have in mind only appears midway through the fourth story, the first three stories provide a background of that society.

Well, Mycroft is, if not a main character, at least a major supporting character in the A True History series.

Seeing Mycroft reminded me of 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress' by Heinlein.

Another very AI-centric dead tree would be 'The Adolescence of P-1' by Thomas Ryan

Heinlein's 1966 novel The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress features Mike, alias Adam Selene, alias Simon Jester, alias Mycroft Holmes, alias Michelle, officially an augmented HOLMES IV system. Mike a supercomputer runs all of Luna.

There are more self-aware computers in Heinlein's later works.

Asimov's positronic robots are AI's.

Stargazer has several interesting AI with interesting personalities and perspectives. They also have limitations.

They are among the most active participants in any of the stories on SOL or Fine Stories.

They are interesting because they don't seem to be overpowered, and occasionally make mistakes. How they interact with other characters seem believable too.

There's a whole 'AI subgenre' of the robot girl angle.

My first story was in that theme, and was really just me writing down a dream before I forgot it:
https://storiesonline.net/s/37397/a-i-girl

The rest of my work is in a completely different genre so I can't really recommend following me on that story's basis.

However of the codes I used these ones should help in finding more in the theme:
Codes: Romantic, Science Fiction, Robot

If I ever get past my writer's block, I've got another AI story in mind from a very different angle.

On a 'sex story' site, why would Artificial Insemination be a major plot point? ;-)

I said annual(yearly), not anal. Of course if it's an old married couple, an annual inspection might be preparation for the annual insertion. :P
