I like to honor unsung heroes. This year, it’s the WACs. Their badge is Athene Pallas, the goddess of war and wisdom. The WACs were all of that. They were volunteers in an era when most of their male counterparts were drafted. But they were women in this man’s Army. So, they never got the credit they’d earned and deserve. A story about changing conditions in a marriage and the cost of not dealing realistically with those changes. This is a different story by my standards. It is shorter, harder edged and there are no side trips to exotic places. Like other stories, this has a Hemingway title, which approximates the theme.

As I mentioned yesterday. I have a series that I wrote over the period of a year and a half. All of these were written for different reasons. But they fit into a single narrative. Since this is a do-over I decided to repost them that way. This is Millie's story. It is the second in the series that began with, "A Totally Unromantic Love Story." Elmore Leonard once said that a writer should write about the things he knows. He wrote about "wild assholes with revolvers." I write about nerds. My narrator is a bit out of the ordinary, even for the nerd breed. But, he is by no means an exception. Clueless is too harsh a term. Instead, I prefer the word "innocent." And IMHO his undeniably limited perspective is no less unbelievable than the hundreds of guys who can LOOK at their wife and just "know". I hope you enjoy - DT
The topic is "The End of the Affair." My problem is that everybody from Ovid to Henry Miller has had something to say about that - not to mention a few million folks on this site. So, I took a slightly different interpretation of "the end" here. My hero makes a bad choice. But he has decent instincts and with a little help from an unlikely source he eventually learns how to be a good person. Some of you might find this a bit allegorical. Although it was not as highly rated as others, this is my personal favorite of all of my stories. I tried to keep it as close to the Hemingway novel as possible. But the lost generation is 90 years old. So I had to come up with a more modern way to separate my hero from his balls. Nevertheless, the rest of the story still leverages the original's plot and characters. I've never run with the bulls. So I moved this to a situation that I have experienced myself. I think Papa would approve.
People who lead unassuming lives interest me; especially if those folks are anything but simple. So, I'm offering you another trip to small-town Wisconsin. The story, looks at trust, from different angles. It is probably more appropriately a Romance. But, it ticks one of the more cherished boxes of the Loving Wives set; wife-watching. So, I put it there. Of course, my aim is to always be original. So, what you think, might not be exactly what you get - Enjoy, DT.

This explores the concept of karma. It involves two souls moving on the river of time. They represent the male and female side of the same coin and fate will inevitably bring them together. Some would call that love. Others might call it predestination. One way or the other, the human condition always dictates the outcome. Perhaps you've had the same experience. This is about the way perception shapes our lives. In my experience, everybody's actuality is in the eye of the beholder. The problem is that, people are terrible eye witnesses. So, they can make life-altering choices based on hazy snapshots of reality. If the picture was clearer they might make better decisions. But, people are rarely that smart; especially where emotional things are involved. At least, that's what I'm playing with here... Thank you for reading me - DT

The beauty of reposting is that I can build an overall narrative out of three separate pieces. This is the first in a series of stories written at different times and for different reasons. The question under debate in this first one is," Does a single snapshot tell you anything meaningful about a person?" It begins under the most prejudicial possible circumstance. Then it evolves based on who the protagonists really are. It definitely isn't romantic. But it IS a love story.
