The next week I had gone back to CSUN to schedule my last exam, and when I stopped in to get some lunch I was standing in line and Shawna surprised me from hugging me from behind. We talked for a bit, and she surprised me when she told me she was working part time at Orbit.
“Oh, only once a week or so. Mostly when they want some help doing server work. But I’ve been learning a lot more about hardware, and help out at the shop sometimes.” I told her that was great, and as we ate she told me all the things Abe had been teaching her since she started.
When we finished eating, she told me there was a party at the APA house that Saturday. And as I was leaving in a couple of weeks, I decided that maybe a last party might be fun. I got Shawna to at least promise me a few dances, and I said I would be there.
When I got home I spent the rest of the day studying for my final exam in Calculus, and after dinner Isabelle called me. We chatted for about an hour, and she asked what I was doing that weekend. I told her I was going to a party on Saturday, but had no other plans at that time. She tried to get me to invite her, but I just made up that you had to be twenty-one in order to go in. Not exactly true, but I knew taking an underage girl to one would be a stupid thing to do. But I promised we could do something else in the next few days.
During dinner, I asked Linda if she had any ideas of what I could do with Isabelle. She gave me a half grin, and asked if I meant more than the obvious which almost caused me to choke. I shook my head as she grinned at me, then seemed to be lost in thought for a moment.
“Well, typically I would suggest a movie, but her English skills are not that great and she might get lost doing that. I would suggest a teen club, but I don’t think there’s been one like Hot Trax in years. How about roller skating?”
I cocked my head at that, and said that would probably work. After dinner she pulled out the phone book, and after looking for a moment shook her head in disgust. “You know, I remember a time there were almost two dozen skating rinks in the Valley. I think your brother and I hit most of them back in the day. But I only see two listed now. When were you thinking of going out?”
I mentioned Friday, and Linda reminded me that was game night. And as I had a party on Saturday I said Thursday, so she picked up the phone and called one of the rinks. And after listening for a moment hung up. “OK, Parthenia does not have any sessions other than tomorrow night and on the weekend. Let me try another one.”
She called another number, and gave me a smile and a thumbs-up before she hung up. “OK, Moonlight is in Burbank, it has adult sessions from 6:00 to 9:00. And again from 9:00 to midnight.”
“OK, I guess that would work. But, well, Isabelle’s really not an adult. Would that be a problem?”
She smiled and shook her head. “Nope, actually not. When they say ‘adult night’, that means no kids, like ankle biters and young teens. They will mostly be playing older music, and so long as she acts in an adult manner it will not be a problem. It is less about age than it is about maturity. We used to do those back in the day, and Mandy was no more than fifteen and she was always welcome. Trust me, as a date they would be fine.”
“OK, I guess then we’ll have to catch the first session.” Linda smiled at me again, and said she would be right back. She went into her office, as I sat in the living room with Sherry and she was telling me about the show she was watching and explaining the Mexican girl with the pet monkey when Linda asked me to join her in the dining room.
“OK, I talked to Patrice, she’s Isabelle’s case worker. I explained that you wanted to take her out skating, but the session ended at midnight. And she said that was after curfew, and we discussed how this could work. I then called Becky, and between the three of us we have a solution.”
At that time there was a knock on the door, and Sherry ran past us to open it, then giggled and led the person in by the hand. Becky said hello, and after hugs for both of us Linda poured her a cup of coffee and she sat next to me.
“OK George, Ms Howard is allowing us to have her out all night on Thursday. I’ll be going to pick her up when she’s done with class, and I have to have her at school the next morning. She said overnight visits are allowed with advance permission, but because of her limited English she is staying with me. Where were you planning on going?”
Linda said the only rink that was open that night was Moonlight, and Becky smiled. “OK, so Burbank until midnight. OK, you need to have her back at my place no later than 12:30. And I tell you right now, as soon as she comes in that door alone she’s going to be there all night. You can see her again briefly at 7:00 before I take her back, but that’s it.”
I simply smiled and nodded my head and said “Si, Tia Becky. Entiendo.” She glared at me and wadded up a napkin and threw it at my face as Linda giggled. I asked her if she understood that, and she nodded.
“Oh, I do know a little Spanish. I had two years of it in High School, and living here of course I learned some. ‘Cerveza, vendida por el six pack’ and ‘Por donde se va al baño’ is about most of it, to be honest.”
Becky giggled at that and tossed another napkin at her before Linda continued. “But we also explained that you were the one that essentially told us her situation so we could get her accepted at Children of the Night. And that you were a real friend of hers, and you were going back to Idaho in less than a month. Patrice said that with Isabelle’s permission she can stay with Becky one night a week, but after this only on weekends. And she thinks this might be good as a transition for her.”
Becky nodded, and said she felt the same. “George, don’t think I’m stupid. I know how you two met, and what for. And all I will say is that I will never ask for what the two of you do together, for as long as she’s a guest in my house there will be none of that there.”
And Linda nodded. “The same here. Even more so than Becky, I understand what that poor girl went through. And as I told you back then, so long as anything you two do is consensual and does not involve money and is not here that is your business. But if I ever found out you took advantage of her, you don’t want to know what I would do.”
I actually sat upright, and shook my head. “Uh, well, we have been together since then. But honest, it was at her instigation. In fact, I was the one that tried to hold her off.”
Linda and Becky looked at each other, and I saw Becky shake her head a bit. “George, I actually do believe you. I remember being that age, and once you experience sex it can be hard to say no again afterwards. You should know we have the same urges, even if we are not supposed to admit to them. And Ms Howard, Patrice, also understands that.”
Linda then said that Patrice did not know the details about how Isabelle came to be there. “I told her the story, that you and her started as a commercial exchange. But actually became friends and saw each other outside of that as friends. And once you understood her actual age and situation you got ahold of me. Which is how I got her placed with them.”
And she gave me that “Stone Linda” look that I only saw a few times. “And she also agrees, that until you leave you would probably be a good ‘transitional boyfriend’ for her. Dates like this, and knowing in advance that you are moving on with your life so nothing permanent. Just like in real life, some people will just come and go and not because of anything you yourself do. As well as spending time with Becky, seeing what a regular household in the US is like.”
Becky even smiled. “And Taylor already knows, whenever she’s over that will be a ‘Spanish only’ time. The girls need a bit more experience in conversational Spanish, and that would be good for them also. His Spanish is about at the level of Linda here, so that will do him some good also.”
They both laughed, and Linda suggested we could even make it a skate party sometime, as obviously since she knew where Moonlight was that she was a skater also. And I think she surprised us both when she shook her head and laughed.
“Oh no, you ain’t getting me on skates!” And when Linda asked how she knew of it, Becky smiled. “Oh, blame you-know-who for that. I think I had been skating maybe two or three times in my life before then. After our time on the run, he got me to agree to going skating with him. And I did that, and yes it was at Moonlight. And I went maybe two or three other times to the one in Reseda, for those BBS and early Internet parties Pete used to have. But it’s been years since I’ve skated, and I have no interest in ever doing it again.”
“Wow, that I have to admit surprises me. I can’t imagine Pete dating a girl that was not as crazy about skating as he was” Linda said, then cracked up when Becky said they simply found other things they could do with their time together.
Then got Linda got another napkin thrown at her when she said she could just imagine what those other things were. “Not like that, you little minx! He was recovering at first from his accident, then he got doing the computer shop. Then we started doing the publishing, so we were doing that. Gaming one or two nights a week, he was working hard for about six months on that investigative reporter rules and adventures, things like that. We really were like any other couple, really.”
And Linda actually looked a bit wistful at that, and we both looked at her when she sighed. And when I asked what was wrong, she shook her head a bit sadly. “George, Becky, believe it or not I really don’t know what that’s like, other than with Sherry. We were together for years, but you know what we did. Believe it or not, I’ve never actually had a relationship like that. Most in my life just kinda came and went, or were stolen moments together.”
We both reached out and held one of her hands, and she squeezed mine and smiled. “But I think both Patrice and Becky are right here. You can be her boyfriend until you go. And that’s actually about what it would be like for her at that age. Very few girls have boyfriends for more than a month or two at that age.”
“Well, at that you are actually right. I know you two were together all through High School, but for me most times it was two or three months then on to the next one.” Becky then listed six guys she dated in school, and said she had not seen or heard anything about any of them in ages. Although her class reunion was coming up soon, and she might look into going.
We talked for a bit more, and I went ahead and walked the quarter mile to the liquor store and grabbed a pint of vodka. After grabbing a glass of orange juice I went up to my room and added some before hiding the bottle in my closet. I messed around on my keyboard until I finished the glass and went to bed.
The next morning I was surprised to get a call from the LA Police Department. It seems that the pawn shop that had taken my equipment had the guy return. “We got him, but he was not one of those that attacked you. This is a black guy, but we’re leaning on him to tell us where he got your stuff.”
And he gave me a pretty good rundown of what they recovered. My DJ equipment not counting my speakers, my video camera, and my computer. And when they asked me to go to the station I said I would be there shortly. I went downstairs and told Linda the good news. As she was watching the three girls she let me borrow her van, so I headed to Van Nuys to talk to the detectives.
Once they led me into an office they showed me the guys photo, and I admitted I had never seen him before and he was not one of those that attacked me. They had all been young, no older than their twenties where this guy had to be at least fifty. Then I had to make a statement and fill out a form where I said I wanted him persecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The detective laughed after I finished filling it out and pointed out the word I used.
“Mister Culver, you mean prosecuted, not persecuted. Do me a favor, write a single line through that word and write ‘prosecuted’ above it and initial it.” I chuckled and did as he requested, and apologized.
