That night, as I stood behind the stage at the auditorium - Mom, Sherry, Joe, and all the others in our troupe were gathered around me before they left to go out and take their reserved seats on the front row - as I take the stage.
Mom told me, “Jerry go out there and show them who Jerry Helton really is. They are here because they have heard you on the radio, or they have bought your albums and singles ... Now, they want to hear you sing onstage in New York City, live on Ed Sullivan’s Show. Every television in America will more than likely be tuned to this show tonight. Give them what they came here for, and be sure to thank those at home and those who stand outside, that didn’t get to come in. They love you and we love you too. Don’t be nervous, be Jerry Helton, and sing like you’re singing to me.”
“Thanks Mom. Give me a hug.”
Mr. Sullivan was just ending his welcoming speech, when I hugged each of my family and friends.
“Ladies and Gentleman, We have with us tonight, one of the fasting rising young Country Music Stars in all of America. You came here tonight because you’ve heard him on the radio, and I’m sure many of you have purchased his records...
“Ladies and gentlemen, Here He Is - JERRY HELTON. Give him a big New York Welcome.”
The longer he talked, the more nervous I was getting. Then, he called my name and the curtain opened with me sitting on my stool, my guitar across my knee, the mike just inches from my face.
“Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m Jerry Helton and I’m honored that Mr. Sullivan invited me to come here tonight and sing a few songs for you. To those of you who may be watching from, welcome and I hope you enjoy our show. To all of you who may not have been able to get inside tonight, I hope to be back this way in the future so we can get together later. We’ll make sure it’s advertised in plenty of time.”
This placed is packed, and as soon as I started talking, the audience were on their feet, clapping and yelling. I’m not sure any of them heard what I said. I kept talking and they finally settled down enough for me to start.
“I’d like to start tonight with one of my all time favorites written and recorded by one of the greatest songwriters in Country Music history, and one of my favorite singers of all time ... Mr. Hank Williams.”
‘You’d have thought I was introducing Hank Williams to come up and join me’
I Can’t Help It If I’m Still In Love With You© Hank Williams 1951
Today I passed you on the street
And my heart fell at your feet
I can’t help it if I’m still in love with you
Somebody else stood by your side
And he looked so satisfied
I can’t help it if I’m still in love with you
A picture from the past came slowly stealing
As I brushed your arm and walked so close to you
Then suddenly I got that old time feeling
I can’t help it if I’m still in love with you
It’s hard to know another’s lips will kiss you
And hold you just the way I used to do
Oh, Heaven only knows how much I miss you
I can’t help it if I’m still in love with you
I was looking at the stage manager as I neared the close of this song. In no time, he was was spinning his hand, with his finger going round and round in a circle, faster and faster. He and I had decided earlier that I wouldn’t even announce my next song, I would just start singing and try to drown them out.
CRAZY ARMS - Ray Price version Ralph Mooney & Charles Seals©
Now blue ain’t the word for the way that I feel
And a storm’s brewing in this heart of mine
This ain’t no crazy dream, I know that it’s real
You’re someone else’s love now, you’re not mine
Crazy arms that reach to hold somebody new
For my yearning heart keeps sayin’ you’re not mine My troubled mind knows soon to another you’ll be wed
And that’s why I’m lonely all the time
So please take the treasured dreams I had for you And me, and take all the love I thought was mine
Some day my crazy arms may hold somebody new
But now I’m so lonesome I could cry
Crazy arms that reach to hold somebody new
But my yearning heart keeps sayin’ you’re not mine
My troubled mind knows soon to another you’ll be wed
And that’s why I’m lonely all the time
OH LONESOME ME ©1957 by DON GIBSON
Everybody’s going out and having fun
I’m just a fool for staying home and having none
I can’t get over how she set me free oh lonesome me
A bad mistake I’m making, just by hanging round
I know that I should have some fun and paint the town
A lovesick fool is blind and just can’t see
oh lonesome me
I’ll bet she’s not like me, she’s out and fancy free
She’s flirtin’ with the boys with all her charms
But I still love her so And brother don’t you know
I’d welcome her right back here in my arms
Well there must be some way
I can lose these lonesome blues
Forget about the past and find somebody new
I’ve thought of everything from A to Z
Oh lonesome me
Oh lonesome me
Your Cheatin’ Heart ©1953 Hank Williams
Your cheatin’ heart
Will make you weep
You’ll cry and cry
and try to sleep
But sleep won’t come
The whole night through
Your cheatin’ heart
Will tell on you
When tears come down
Like falling rain
You’ll toss around
And call my name
You’ll walk the floor
The way I do
Your cheatin’ heart
Will tell on you
Your cheatin’ heart
Will pine some day
And crave the love
You threw away
The time will come
When you’ll be blue
Your cheatin’ heart -
Will tell on you
“My Special Angel” Bobby Helms ©1957
You are my special angel
Sent from up above
The Lord smiled down on me
And sent an angel to love
You are my special angel
Right from paradise
I know you’re an angel
Heaven is in your eyes
The smile from your lips
brings the summer sunshine
Tears from your eyes bring the rain
I feel your touch, your warm embrace
And I’m in heaven again
You are my special angel
Through eternity
I’ll have my special angel
Here to watch over me
A smile from your lips brings
the summer sunshine
The tears from your eyes bring the rain
I feel your touch, your warm embrace
And I’m in heaven again
You are my special angel
Through eternity
I’ll have my special angel
Here to watch over me
Here to watch over me.
I saw the stage manager wave his hand overhead, then make a T with both hands.
As the curtain started closing, Mr. Sullivan stepped out to announce the next set would start after a brief pause.
As soon as I laid my guitar on my stool, I made a beeline for the men’s room.
I had just washed my hands when I heard Mr. Sullivan talking. I was still drying my hands on my jeans when I picked up my guitar and sat on my stool near the center stage where it’s marked with an x, inside a circle.
“Ladies and Gentlemen here he is - Jerry Helton, ready to entertain us with more of his amazing recorded ballads. Please give him another big welcome, then get ready for another set of five songs by the most sought after young artist in America...
“JERRY HELTON”
I was sitting on my stool by then, and as soon as Mr. Sullivan stepped offstage. I started playing before the crowd could drown me out. Some were still standing, but I kept on, trying hard to get all my songs covered before we run out of time.
Cold Cold Heart © 1950 Hank Williams
I tried so hard my dear to show that you’re my every dream
Yet you’re afraid each thing I do is just some evil scheme
A memory from your lonesome past keeps us so far apart
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart?
Another love before my time made your heart sad and blue
And so my heart is paying now for things I didn’t do
In anger unkind words are said that make the teardrops start
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart?
You’ll never know how much it hurts to see you sit and cry
You know you need and want my love, yet you’re afraid to try
Why do you run and hide from life, to try it just ain’t smart
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart?
There was a time when I believed that you belonged to me
But now I know your heart is shackled to a memory
The more I yearn to care for you, the more we drift apart
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart?
I’ll Hold You In My Heart ©1947 Eddy Arnold - Hal Horton - Tommy Dilbeck
I will hold you in my heart till I can hold you in my arms
Like you’ve never been held before
I’ll think of you each day and then I’ll dream the night away
Till you are in my arms once more
The stars up in the sky know the reason why
I feel so blue when I’m away from you
I’ll hold you in my heart till I can hold you in my arms
So darling please wait for me
The stars up in the sky know the reason why
I feel so blue when I’m away from you
I’ll hold you in my heart till I can hold you in my arms
So darling please wait for me.
Just Call Me Lonesome ©1955 Rex Griffin - 1st Recorded by Eddy Arnold 1955
Why must I love the heartless one
Who’ll never know the harm she’s done
Though love is blind I should have known
Just call me lonesome from now on.
I climb the stairs up to my room
But no one meets me in my gloom
The silence tells me she is gone
Just call me lonesome from now on.
These walls will hide me when I cry
And hope that heaven lets me die
What good is life when hope is gone
Just call me lonesome from now on...
How Many Arms Have Held You (Eddy Arnold) - Don Robertson - Howard Barnes ©1953
How many arms have held you
And hated to let you go
How many, how many I wonder
But I really don’t want to know.
How many lips have kissed you
And set your soul aglow
How many, how many I wonder
But I really don’t want to know.
So always make me wonder
Always make me guess
And even if I ask you darling
Don’t confess.
Just let it remain your secret
But darling I love you so
No wonder, no wonder, I wonder
No, I really don’t want to know...
”You Win Again”©1953 Hank Williams
The news is out all over town
That you’ve been seen a-runnin’ ‘round
I know that I should leave, but then
I just can’t go, you win again.
This heart of mine, could never see
What everybody, knew but me
Just trusting you, was my great sin
What can I do, you win again.
I’m sorry for, your victim now
‘Cause soon his head like mine will bow
He’ll give his heart but all in vain
And someday say, you win again.
You have no heart, you have no shame
You take true love, and give the blame
I guess that I should not complain
I love you still, you win again.
I looked up to see the manager make the T again and when the song ended, the curtains were already being pulled. The crowd was still clapping and yelling as the curtains closed once more.
I knew there was only ninety seconds on this break also, so I stayed on my stool and took a deep breath.
Wanting You’ © 2019 JRyter
I’ve wanted you for so long
Though you never look my way
Give me reason to hold on
Look into my eyes, feel the words I say
Still wanting you - wanting you
I long for you day and night
Listen to my heart, it beats so strong
The touch of your hands feels so right
My love for you can’t be wrong
Still wanting you - wanting you
Be my lover, be my friend
Don’t walk life’s pathway alone...
Wanting you forever, til the very end
My love for you can’t be wrong
Still wanting you - wanting you -
Always wanting you - wanting you
I Can’t Take This Anymore ©2020 JRyter
My heart can’t take this anymore
All the words we used to say
Don’t mean the same as before
And I can’t take this - anymore
Why must hearts have to ache
Why must love turn to hurt
How much more can we take
Love was so much fun at first
But I can’t take this - anymore
Why does love turn to hate
Tell me how to make it right
Where’s the love we used to make
Is there someone else in your life
Well I can’t take this - anymore
Why do hearts have to break
My life can’t take this anymore
And now the road we chose to take
Means the closing of the door...
‘Cause I can’t take this - anymore
My heart can’t take this - anymore
I can’t stop loving you ©1957 Don Gibson
I can’t stop loving you
So I’ve made up my mind
To live in memory
Of such an old lonesome time
I can’t stop wanting you
It’s useless to say
So I’ll just live my life
In dreams of yesterday.
Those happy hours
That we once knew
Though long ago,
They still make me blue
They say that time
Heals a broken heart
But time has stood still
Since we’ve been apart
I can’t stop loving you
So I’ve made up my mind
To live in memory
Of such an old lonesome time
