My wives said I needed a new wardrobe for the office. Rita was the most insistent, and she arranged for an appointment with a tailor at a men’s specialty store that Charlie recommended. Charlie always looked good in the office while he had been with HS, so I accepted his suggestions. Rita knew exactly what I needed as office casual and my other wives agreed, but Charlie had said that whatever I bought as off-the-shelf clothing had to be tailored to fit me properly. We left to buy Clothes. Cindy had some work to do and couldn’t go, but my wives and I went to Greeley for my appointment.

When I finally got home from shopping, I was told Matt had come by the house to talk with Cindy, and since he was still here, I went and found them.

When they finished talking, I said, “Hello, Matt, our meeting with the construction company is tomorrow morning. Will you and Mary be there?”

“We hadn’t planned on it, Doug. We gave our input to William, and for construction, all of the information is either on the blueprints or in the specifications.”

I said, “Tomorrow is primarily about the construction of the interim living area, and you know more about the construction details for our interim living space and Embassy areas than the rest of us, except Bill.

“Mary also needs to talk with William about the warehouse space that we will need at our interim living area and at the Embassy facility.

“Phyllis will want to talk about the interim living area and the main Embassy facility, so I think it might be beneficial for you and Mary to be there.”

“That makes sense. Plan on us being there, but if Mary has a conflict, I’ll let you know.”

Matt left to find Sereine; he needed to talk with Sereine before he left for home, so he went looking for her.

When Matt left, I got to thinking about how I would get from Ken’s house to our interim living area and the Embassy Compound. I went to find Matt, and found him still with Sereine.

“I waited until they finished their discussion. Then I said, “Matt, we have a transportation problem at the ranch. It seems like I have two issues with transportation.

“The first issue is I immediately need a vehicle for personal use. I need to meet Phyllis Jones and Jack Tander, the construction manager in the middle of the ranch tomorrow. How am I to get from Ken’s place to that location on the ranch to meet with them? Hopping doesn’t seem like a good idea and I don’t want to impose on Ken all the time for transportation.

“Since I need a truck for my use tomorrow, I was thinking of a used vehicle. I looked the newspaper ads for pickup trucks, but that didn’t help me very much. Then I tried the Internet. On the Internet, I was overwhelmed with information, and the information confused me. I decided to find you. You were still with Sereine discussing temporary and long-term workspace for the Trade Check Point. I waited until the two of you finished your conversation. I don’t know much about vehicles, so I need help.

“I am thinking of a truck for my use primarily on the ranch. There are so many manufacturers, sizes, body styles, engine sizes, options, and other things that I know nothing about, and I can’t decide what would be best. Then, there are all the claims and counterclaims that seem to say opposite things. Where should I begin? Can you help me pick something? I was thinking of a used truck, so I could use it right away.

“My second issue is my people will need transportation. Our security people will need vehicles to patrol the ranch and those vehicles will be driven on the perimeter road, which is a dirt road, and muddy in the wet season, and to move across country to various parts of the ranch. My ladies and the rest of my staff will also need vehicles for trips to town to shop, to go to meetings with other people, and to do other things.”

Matt said, “I can help you, Doug. You actually need at least two types of vehicles.

“Your people will need different types of vehicles. So the first thing we need to do is divide everyone who needs a vehicle into groups. Then we need to determine what each group plans to do with their vehicle. The usage will determine the type of vehicle each person needs.”

“Let’s start with your security people. They need vehicles for patrolling the ranch. Their vehicles will be used for driving on the perimeter road and for off road use, carrying small groups of people, and the vehicles may be used to haul small amounts of cargo. It seems to me that your security officers will need 4-wheeldrive pick-up trucks. The trucks will usually have a driver and possibly one to three passengers. Is that right?”

I replied, “Yes that sounds right.”

Matt said, “What I would recommend is a 4-wheeldrive, crew cab with bench seats, a long bed, air conditioning, heavy duty suspension, and a front-mounted winch. I can’t think of anything to do with the ranch that would require you to have both front and rear-mounted winches. If the security personnel are to drive it, skip the entertainment package, Bill will want their minds on their jobs.

“Okay, for your ladies and the rest of the staff, they will need a standard car, van, or similar vehicle.”

I answered, “Yes.”

We will have to wait and talk with the rest of the staff about their vehicle needs.

Matt said, “For your immediate need, a used vehicle will be a good choice for you, Doug.

“However, what often happens is, you end up getting the prior owner’s headaches. He traded it in for a reason and the dealer is not obligated to explain why the prior owner traded it in; assuming the dealer even knows the real reason it was traded in. Personally, I would recommend that you buy a new vehicle, but you will get a better deal on a new vehicle if you buy it with the other vehicles and that purchase will be delayed for some time.

“However, if all you want is a single, used truck for short-term use, almost any truck will do, so we could go to a used car lot. However, I recommend waiting. Tomorrow, if I recall correctly, you will hop to Ken’s house for your meeting with Phillis and William. You will meet them at the interim living area, which is a short walk from Ken’s house. Then you can ride with them to the Embassy Compound location.

“When you are ready to buy a fleet of trucks for the Embassy, we will do it the right way, so you will get the right vehicles for the job; but that can take a lot of time.”

“As far as new vehicle goes, I don’t go by manufacturer. Every year the manufacturers make changes to their vehicles. I have found that those changes can have an impact on the ride, handling, and other characteristics. What we will do is find the manufacturer that produces the best basic vehicle we want. To do that, we will go test drive trucks. Once we get an idea of which manufacturer builds the truck we want, we can start looking for a specific dealer. When we buy multiple new vehicles, it will be a good idea to go through the dealer’s Fleet Sales group.”

I said, “Alright, I suppose it would be best to address new vehicles after my next trip to the Multiverse. Besides, it may be a good idea for the future to order a new truck tailored to my needs and preferences, after we return. That will give me time to think about what I want.”

Sensing that we were finished with our discussion, Sereine had waited for us to finish our conversation.

Sereine said, “Something just occurred to me, Doug. After we talked about me taking Coral and Sto to Toomby, I had the feeling we were overlooking something. When you mentioned the next trip, I realized what was bothering me.

“When I was stationed at Toomby’s Trade Checkpoint, the traders would check in, store their merchandise, and then go into town and rent a room and eat at the local restaurants. They would sometimes be there for two or more days to complete their trading trip.”

Sensing that we were finished with our discussion,

I said, “Oh, Shit!”

Sereine said, “Yeah, I figured you would see the problem right away. Here on Earth, they won’t be able to do that. They have no place to live on the ranch, can’t eat the local food, they don’t speak English, and I don’t think they can legally leave the ranch. In addition, they will need some place to store their trade goods, until they can sell them, or a place to do business with local Earth traders. I think a new facility will be needed to supply them with those needs.”

I said, “You’re right, Sereine. That will be a problem if we don’t start addressing it now. Do you have any ideas on how to solve this problem?”

Sereine said, “As I said earlier, it seems to me we will need a new facility that can supply the traders with rooms that they can rent and food they can eat, if they don’t have their own food. A place to do business with Earth traders and a place to store their merchandise until it is sold. I’m thinking that your trading company, or a new company, could build a Trade Center that provides traders with these services. After all, you were talking about having your company set up a sideline of trading with the traders. This could just be an extension of that effort.”

I said, “I see what you are saying. The sideline I had in mind was buying the Multiverse trader’s trade goods and selling those goods on Earth through my contacts. I need to give a new Trade Center some thought. I don’t want to comingle my current business activities with a new business’s activities and I don’t want any conflicts with my position as Ambassador. Trading with my family’s business for my family’ personal needs is coming close to conflicting with my Ambassadorial duties, so I need to be very careful.

“Let me go find Cindy. I want the four of us to meet in my office so we can discuss this matter further. I’ll meet you and Matt there in about five minutes.”

Cindy was in her bedroom, so I let her know about the meeting and told her to bring her computer with her. Two minutes later, the four of us were in my office with the door closed.

I said, “Cindy a few minutes ago, Sereine pointed out that the traders coming here to trade will need a place to stay, food to eat, and other support. We need to talk about this venture. She suggested that we build a facility to provide for their needs. I was thinking about what the Embassy owed to the traders. My mission here is to promote trade and I see it as the Embassy has an obligation to aid the traders. However, the Embassy needs to avoid entering into a commercial trade ventures with the Traders that come here. Therefore, I think I should form a personally owned business here on the ranch, which will provide the trader’s needs. Cindy, please take the minutes of this meeting and keep track of any items that we will need to do this as we discuss them.

“To clarify matters, I need to make sure that it is clear to all the people who come to Earth that the ranch is my personal property. However, the Multiverse Government leased the ranch for its use as the Embassy. My lease with the Multiverse Government clearly indicates that I have the right to establish personally owned businesses on the ranch.

“My current trading business is trading with my family’s Multiverse trading business. If I wish, I can expand my trading business to provide the Multiverse traders, who arrive on the ranch, with different types of support, such as lodging, food, and storage space, or I can create a new business that will provide that support. Personally, a new business seems as if it would be simpler. It would be easier to prevent commingling my activities and confuse my accountants. However, I need to be careful that my Ambassadorial any my new business interests do not conflict with my current trade activities.

“Until now my thoughts of trade have been, when my ladies or I need something, we notify my warehouse personnel. They will then communicate with my family’s business to buy the merchandise and provide it to us.

“Sereine’s comments have led me to think that as the Ambassador, the ranch needs a Trade Center. The Trade Center will need to include a hotel, a restaurant, a place for the visiting Traders to do business with local traders and we will probably need dedicated spaces for offices and other currently unspecified things. Let’s discuss the idea and features of a Trade Center after we return from our next visit to the Multiverse.

“Matt, setup a meeting with everyone to discuss our next Multiverse trip for tomorrow morning.”

After breakfast, we convened the meeting to discuss what we needed to do during this trip to the Multiverse.

I started the meeting by saying, “Before we leave for the Multiverse, I need to know who will be going with me, so let me know if you need to go on this trip.

“Cindy, we need to review all of our lists and if necessary update our list of things that we need to do in the Multiverse for this trip. Be sure to highlight the items that need to be done during this trip. Organize the list by planet, and include everything that needs to be done on each planet, even if we don’t plan to do the items during this trip. If we have time and the opportunity, we may be able to take care of some of those additional items.

“I need to clarify my obligations as an Ambassador verses my obligations as a trader.

“Sereine, since you have the most experience with a Trade Check Point and visitors to a Provisional Member World, what do you see as my Ambassadorial obligations to someone who visits Earth, and how would you recommend my satisfying those obligations?”

“Doug, the first thing you need to do is to provide an arrival point on the ranch for the traders and their trade goods. The point of arrival should be near the Trade Check Point.

“Since your agreement with the President and the Multiverse makes the ranch Multiverse territory, it is my understanding that people from the Multiverse can come to the ranch but they are not legally allowed to leave the ranch. For them to legally leave the ranch they need to obtain a visitor’s visa that will permit them to leave the ranch. Currently, Earth is not issuing visitor visas to people from the Multiverse, so you need to arrange for them to get visas.

“For all visitors, from the Multiverse, you are required to provide them with information about any dangers and hazards that you are aware of in the local area, and how to avoid those dangers and hazards. If the visitor is a Multiverse trader, you also need to brief them on the rules for trading on Earth.

I said, “Matt, if you are thinking of implementing my plan for imposing an import and export tax, then we need to get the tax defined and approved.

Matt said, “I think you will also need a Twixt System to support both the activities of the Embassy and your personal business. The traders may also want to use it. So the new Trade Center is the logical place for a Twixt facility.”

I said, “Alright, Sereine, as a businessman, what types of support would you see me providing to my competition?”

“Well on at a business level, you aren’t obligated to provide them anything.

“However, they will need a variety of things that you as a businessman could make available to them at a profit. For example, lodging, sugar- free food, and a place to store their trade goods, at least until my people can clear them to begin trading.

“If they choose to obtain a visa and leave the ranch to trade with the local merchants, then they will need transportation and guides who can act as translators. They will also need banking services for acquiring local currency, depositing what they receive from their sales and a bank also provides them with a means for paying their import/export duties and other services you provide.

“In addition to a place to sleep and food, they may also need medical care, and other things to meet their day-to-day needs.

Sereine said, “Doug, The one difficulty I see in them leaving the ranch is tracking the traders’ sales and purchases for tax purposes. The techniques we use on the current Provisional Worlds won’t work here on Earth. First, Earth has an income tax, not a Planet Tax. Second, on our Provisional Multiverse Worlds, the traders and local merchants both have to file transaction reports with the Trade Check Point authorities. These reports are spot checked against what the trader reports and against the individuals’ bank and tax records. Any glaring discrepancies are investigated.

“We do have some degree of tracking the sales and purchases made between local merchants and traders when they are on the ranch. But once the traders leave the ranch to make their sales and purchases, the local merchants don’t have to file a report. So we have no means of cross-checking all of the information the traders provide us on their sale and purchase reports about their activities off of the ranch.”

I said, “Yes, we do need to consider that, Sereine.

“Matt, if I put together a company to support the needs of the traders, do you think Mary is capable of running it, and do you have any thoughts on how I can set up the business?”

“I don’t know, Doug. It isn’t the type of work that she is used to doing, and what you will really need is someone who can also speak Trade Speak.

“The first thing that comes to my mind is the traders won’t start doing business until after we are moved into the Embassy. You own all of the mobile homes and portables that we are setting up as our temporary living location, so you could rent them to the traders as lodging, storage, and trading space. You can also establish transportation and guide services temporarily at that location. Since the guides will also be their translators, the guides can be required to file a report on what is sold and purchased, the amount of purchase or sale, and what was sold or purchased. That may be the way for you to cross check what the traders tell you.

I said, “That sounds like the basis for a good plan, Matt. With Mary running the warehouse operation, all I need to do is find a staff for the Trader Support operation.”

Sereine added, “Well it seems to me that you have a problem with what to do with all the sugar addicts on Slave World that you promised to try and help. If you get them to Earth, they could go through the sugar desensitization process, and learn English, the local area, how to drive, and everything else that they would need to know to support the traders. With a visa, they can leave the ranch.”

I said, “Hmm. That may be a good solution to the problem of what to do with them, Sereine. What about it, Matt, would we be violating any Earth laws or customs, if we operate a business from the ranch that does business with the traders and the local merchants?”

Matt said, “I’m not sure, Doug. I’m not aware of anything, but you would need a lawyer to advise you. The only things that come to my mind that may cause you a problem is licenses and taxes. Especially import and export licenses, Multiverse merchandise will be sold on Earth and Earth merchandise will be removed from Earth. Are you planning to register your businesses with the Multiverse, Earth, or both?”

I said, “I haven’t thought about where to register the Earth half of my family’s trading business. The way my family and I are setting up operation of the Earth and Multiverse warehouses, they are essentially separate businesses. I will have to check with Kendrick to see if it is legal in the Multiverse for me to register a business on Earth, since I am the Ambassador. If so how a US business will affect my Multiverse taxes. I will also have to check with my Earth tax lawyer to see how my Multiverse income might affect my Earth taxes.”

Before I could continue, Sereine interrupted me, “Doug, you own the ranch and it will be your home. You can certainly operate a business on your property. But, the ranch will also be the location of the Embassy. It should be legal for you to operate a commercial business, especially one registered on Earth, on Embassy property?”

I said, “Ah, I don’t know, Sereine. As I said, all I know is I have a lease agreement that gives the Multiverse use of the property, but that agreement does not prevent me from personally using it for other things. Cindy, add that to my list of things to check on, and if you haven’t done it yet, add an item to my Ambassadorial list to define trade duties and taxes. Add another item to generate a tutorial for first time visitors that warn them of the planet’s dangers and hazards.

“For the Trade Guilds, I will also need to prepare a description of the hazards on Earth, procedures for trading with Earth, and a caution for the trading parties to not bring weapons to Earth, those items will probably need to go into the tutorial also. Kevin will also need the details of the Import/Export Duties, so he can get approval from Maribel’s Committee.

“I considered importing hover trucks for our security personnel to use for their perimeter patrols instead of pickups, but I think it may be better to use pickup trucks.

“Add another item to our Multiverse list, if not already listed, to locate people who can aid me in establishing a currency exchange rate and in establishing an agreement between the Earth and Multiverse banks. It would be nice if we could get a branch of a Multiverse bank here at the Embassy.”

“Matt, will using our temporary living area to house the traders who come to visit be a problem with the Earth authorities? If so, will that affect the plans for our temporary living area or the design of the Embassy Compound?

“I don’t see how it would impact the design of the Embassy Compound for I consider the Embassy Compound as our future home and the future home of our people. I do not want the traders to live in our compound, while we live there. So after we move into the Embassy Compound, they can live in our temporary living area. However, I am starting to get the impression our temporary living area will not be adequate for what we are discussing.

Matt said, “Doug, I have no idea of how many traders we will need to host at any one time, so I don’t know if we will have enough mobile homes for lodging. The same thing applies to the use of the portables for storage, trading space, offices for your businesses, and Sereine’s people. The trader support effort may require parking space for Earth vehicles, and may need additional portables. We will also need parking space for while we are living there. If additional mobile homes or portables are needed, I don’t think it will be a big deal to add more at a later time. However, if we build a Trade Center, then we will have to move everything associated with trade to that location. For now, let’s assume we will, at least, initially use our temporary living area to support the traders. Of course, that means you have to delay the arrival of traders until we have moved into the Embassy Compound.

“Doug, you talked about relocating the equipment Sergei’s people will be installing around the temporary living site to the Embassy after it is constructed. Do you see a need for a similar security perimeter around the Trader Support area?”

I said, “That is probably a good idea, Matt, but do we need to provide the traders with that level of security. They will be within our outer perimeter, but too far away from the Embassy’s inner perimeter for Embassy’s inner perimeter to protect them.

“I don’t think it is necessary to buy new equipment to replace what we move to the Embassy Compound, but it wouldn’t hurt. If we do replace the equipment, we can leave the equipment that we use at the temporary location in place, and replace it with additional equipment for use at the Embassy. I’ll talk with Sergei about doing that. After we move into the Embassy Compound, I don’t want to provide that location with weapons to protect that area, unless the weapons are under remote control of our security personnel.”

Sereine had been silent for a while, and then she said, “Doug, to be realistic, will the temporary living area really be large enough and suitable for a Trade Center?

“I can’t see my Trade Check Point, a trading area, the living and storage space, and the Guide Service all being collocated at our future temporary living compound. It just won’t be a large enough area. It would be nice if we could separate the Check Point and trading areas from the temporary living area and locate them in a single Trade Center building. The traders could stay at the temporary lodging area, store their goods there, and the Transportation and Guide Services could be collocated at that area. However, I doubt the temporary living location is suitable for all of those activities. It seems to me that a Trade Center should be built to house all of the activities associated with trade with Earth.

“Local merchants could come to the Trade Center to conduct business with the traders, and my people would be available to process new arrivals and trade transactions. All of the businesses you are thinking of starting can be located at the
Trade Center. If you need someone to collect import/export duties, they can also have an office in the Trade Center.”

I said, “You have valid points, Sereine. However, our main problem right now is the timing of everything.

“The more we talk about trading, the more it seems like we will have to build a separate facility specifically to support trade and the traders. It seems to me that such a facility would consist of multiple buildings. I can see a hotel-restaurant. There could be an extension, or a separate building, that would also provide a trade area, shops, a Twixt facility, and a bank. The trade area would include the Trade Check Point, an open area where traders and the local merchants could meet to do business, private offices for the traders and the local merchants to do business, and a trader support business to support traders who want to leave the ranch. Then we would also need a storage area with small rooms for the traders to store their merchandise and a different storage area if the traders use large shipping containers for their merchandise.

“The best area on the farm for the trading facility would probably be to the north of Ken’s farm house and near the ranch’s western border. We can have a road constructed between the Trade Center facility and the County Road. The new road will allow the locals to go to the Trade Center. I can’t think of a reason for the facility to need a force field. But I will let Sergei make that decision.”

Our conversation had addressed everything that we could think of, and we ended our meeting. Matt went home and Sereine, Cindy, and I returned to our other activities.

Betty’s cooking had been improving all the time. It really improved after we got the Multiverse herbs and spices she wanted. Lately, it had improved even more as she started mixing Multiverse and Earth seasonings.

I said, “Mac and his family really complimented Betty on the dish she made that used Jalapeno peppers. They said it reminded them of the cooking on their home planet. Most of us found that we had trouble with the burning sensation it created in our mouths and throats. Now Betty fixes very spicy dishes for Mac and his family, and sometimes a few of us will have a very, small amount of those dishes as side dish. I keep forgetting to suggest Betty create those dishes as the main dish for the meal, but not as spicy.”

After dinner, Sereine and I discussed what we would each be doing during this trip, so we could coordinate our schedules.

I said, “According to my count, Sereine, we have twelve people going. After we get to First Stop, you are going to take Abby, Kim, Sto and Coral to Cinnity, while I take the rest of the party to the estate. What are your plans while on Vora?”

Sereine said, “Basically what we discussed earlier. I need to get Kim a shot and splinter, and file my report with Inspector Nast. When I am done with him, I will arrange for Abby and Kim to spend some time with the Multiverse police. I suspect we will finish on Vora before you finish on Slave World, so I will send you a Twixt the day before we plan to leave for the estate. I will leave Kim and Abby at the Estate, while I take Coral and Sto to Toomby. When we finish there, we will return to the estate and wait until we are ready to return to Earth.”

I said, “Alright, I have a lot to discuss with President Jenson, Chairman Smart, and Kendrick. You will probably be finished before me, so comm my parents and let them know I will return to Vora a few days after you leave. Let them know my party has grown, so we will stay at the Trinity Hotel in Cinnity, and I will comm them when I arrive. I need to meet with Kevin, Sergei, and my parents, and I will probably stop by to talk with Carl before I leave.

“I am planning on two weeks for this trip but it may be longer. However, for planning purposes, I told Kim and Ken three weeks. I am going to ask Kendrick, but do you know if it legal for a man to marry his slaves?”
