Three days later, at around 8 pm, Nick had just gone over to Ryan and Roxie’s to watch a game. The kids had eaten and were playing in the living room before bed. I had just changed into my pajamas and planned to watch a new series on Netflix that Nick wouldn’t have been interested in, then drink a glass or two of wine after I put the kids down.
My phone rang as I headed to the kitchen to do dinner’s dirty dishes. Roxie’s name lit the screen, and I answered, thinking it was about an idea I had sent her for the corporate office remodel and wanted her opinion on.
“Hi sweetie, go get dressed,” she said when I answered. “We’re going dancing.”
“What? Tonight? Now?” I replied, laughing at how absurd the idea sounded when I was planning to spend my evening watching TV from bed. “It’s a bit late to go out.”
“It’s just 8 pm, and the boys are going to be watching one of their stupid games, and I need to move. I cannot sit there and listen to hours of men talking about balls and points. Wear the black cocktail dress you bought last week. The slinky one. I’ll pick you up in a few hours.”
My heart started pounding. “Roxie, the kids have to go to bed soon, and I haven’t talked to Nick yet. About any of this.”
“Don’t worry about the kids. I already called a sitter for you, and she will be there in twenty minutes, and Ryan already spoke to Nick,” she said. “Nick is fine with it. Wait until you see his face when you walk out in that dress, and he knows you’re going without him. And you’re doing this for me too. I need a night out. Get dressed and get over here. You’re coming.”
She hung up before I could argue.
I stood in the kitchen, phone still in my hand. I called Nick, who was still driving, and told him Roxie wanted to go dancing.
“Yeah, Ryan told me that Roxie wanted to take you out for some fun.” His voice sounded relaxed. “Sounds like a great idea. You deserve to let loose a little after everything you have been doing. Do you have a sitter or should I come home?”
“Yeah, Roxie said she has one coming over now, so you can just stay there and enjoy the game, and I guess I will see you over there in a bit. Roxie said she will drive.”
“Sounds good. See you soon.”
He did not sound upset. He did not ask any other questions. That should have made me feel better. It didn’t.
I went upstairs and turned on the shower. While the water heated, I stood in front of the closet and looked at the black dress. Short. Open back—thin straps. The one Roxie had talked me into. My stomach was a knot. Part of me wanted to call her back and cancel. Tell her I had a headache. Tell her the kids needed me. Anything.
