The next few days blurred together. We worked through boxes in the morning and again after dinner. Sarah was particular about where things went. She had a plan for every room. I mostly carried, opened, and tried not to put anything in the wrong place.
“The blue towels go in the hall closet,” she said one afternoon, standing in the doorway with her hands on her hips. “Not the master. The master ones are the gray ones.”
“Got it.”
“And Michael’s dinosaurs are supposed to be on the shelf, not the floor.”
“He’s playing with them.”
“He can play with them after they’re on the shelf.”
I smiled and did what she asked. She was in her element. The house was coming together the way she had designed it. The kids were happier than I had seen them in months. Nicole’s room looked like her room again. Her books were on the shelves. Her posters were on the walls. Michael’s bed was finally put together, and he had slept in it without waking up once.
