The next morning, I stood in the driveway with coffee when the first truck turned the corner. Sarah was inside with the kids. She came out when she heard the air brakes. Nicole and Michael were right behind her. Michael was still in his pajamas. Nicole had her shoes on the wrong feet.
“Is that our stuff?” Nicole asked. She was bouncing on her toes.
“Yeah,” I said. “Everything we shipped from Iowa.”
Sarah covered her mouth with her hand. She looked like she might cry. “I can’t believe it’s actually here.”
The driver climbed down and asked where we wanted the boxes. Sarah pointed toward the open garage. Michael ran in circles around the back of the truck until I told him to stay on the sidewalk. Nicole kept asking which boxes had her books. The movers started unloading. Sarah and I stood side by side and watched our old life come off the truck, piece by piece.
