Everyone noticed the sticker. But nobody would dream of telling Kate about it. Everyone knew how generous she was with her anger. The last thing they needed was to be punished as the messenger bearing bad news. Besides, after talking to Gordon, Kate was in an especially savage mood.

There was one assistant who saved her boss from having to spend the entire day with the insulting sticker on her back. Olivia was a girl whose diction resembled a leaky plumbing valve, but whose heart was as kind and bright as a patch of sunshine.

“Mrs. Stephenson, Crawford is proposing yoga classes, a course designed especially for creative people...” the girl said, approaching Kate and deftly ripping away the sticker without being noticed.

“Is this the same Crawford who says the soul escapes little by little with every breath? That we ought to breathe less often and not as deeply?” the boss asked darkly.

“Well, yes...”

Kate suddenly slapped her palm against the desk, taking out on her subordinate anger that was really directed at Gordon.

“Why are you still bringing me Crawford’s proposals?! Do you think I have endless free time for every piece of idiocy? What exactly do I employ you for if you can’t even decide whether Crawford’s ideas are worth considering? Perhaps you need to find yourselves different jobs?!”

Olivia wilted. She had brought up Crawford merely as a pretext to remove that obscene sticker from her boss’s back unnoticed, to help her ... and this was her reward. At work, Kate was a dangerous, predatory shark. Anyone who treated her like a human being and expected the same in return got burned.

... Later, Kate convened a company-wide meeting of Ascendant Arts. She had written a speech during her enforced leave. This moment mattered to her ... the messianic role, the opportunity to instruct others. She felt like a preacher. Many people took jobs at the company simply to receive the jewels of Kate’s words. They considered her a great person. Catherine sensed this, and at the same time reluctantly lost respect for those who worshipped her blindly. No wonder her gaze had gradually acquired a settled expression of haughty disdain.

Pacing before the assembled employees (Gordon was there, incidentally, as was every Ascendant Arts worker down to the cleaning staff), Catherine declared:

“Ad astra per aspera. Through hardship to the stars! That’s what everything we’re doing here is about. Not so long ago, within your own lifetimes, there was nothing here. And that’s precisely why we began building the City of A and Silver Lining here. We weren’t improving or modernizing something old. We were creating something new, something unique, from nothing. People tripped us up, tried to turn us into a part of somebody else’s projects, to fit us into their system. They said our vision was impossible. But we held firm. Because we knew that every great achievement begins with a mad attempt! Submission is for sheep. Here we have given gifted people the most important thing of all: freedom. People commonly think freedom is dangerous. Living with freedom is terribly difficult, because freedom favors the bad and the good equally. Under its rays, flowers and marijuana grow equally fast. But without freedom, the flowers won’t grow at all. We are doing something great. Every one of us. Each of you is already part of history. Thank you for being here at Silver Lining!”

Applause broke out. Some of it sincere ... some of it nervous, because Kate scanned the room intently, registering each person’s response to her words. Every Ascendant Arts employee had been interviewed by her before being hired. And although Catherine declared that submission was for sheep, submission was exactly what she cultivated in most of the people present.

But not in Gordon. He stood lounging against a column with his arms crossed, a contemptuous smirk playing on his face. He saw not people but sheep gathered before a shepherdess. He himself was a wolf. Kate noticed that he wasn’t clapping.

“Predictable,” she thought grimly, yet something tugged in her lower belly. For the rest of the meeting, she saw not the crowd’s applause but Gordon’s mocking silence. It infuriated her that some insignificant underling dared to sabotage, almost openly, the order she had established and earned! A security guard. An old man. A nobody. And she was a titan!

“Just wait, you louse. I’ll wipe that sneer off your lips!”

After the meeting the crowd surged toward the elevator. Far too many people packed into the car with Kate. Unsurprisingly, the elevator jammed. Kate angrily hammered the call button; she had an important meeting with an entrepreneur who wanted to open an art restaurant in the Silver Lining Center, displaying paintings by artists from the City of A. The meeting had gone on too long as it was, with countless matters to settle, and now the elevator was stuck!

“Where is the elevator operator...?” she whispered. There was a rustle behind her and a sharp smell of food. Kate turned and saw ... Gordon. He was holding a hamburger.

“Can’t you eat that later?!”

“No, Ms. Stevenson. You spent so long talking about yourself that I got hungry.”

“Stephenson!” Kate hissed, looking around at the other passengers. The old man was undermining her authority in public! “And I wasn’t talking about myself, I was talking about Silver Lining, about our company! You need an extra medical examination. There’s something wrong with your hearing.”

“I heard every single word you said, Ms. Stev --”

“Be quiet!” the beauty interrupted with a wave of her hand. She understood that Gordon was about to mutilate her name again in front of everyone. “Let me speak to the elevator operator!”

“I’m listening,” a woman’s voice came through the speaker. Kate explained that they were trapped, then identified herself so that the operator would hurry. All the while, the beauty could sense the other passengers’ bewilderment: how could an elderly security guard dare speak like that to the most formidable woman in the City of A?

And Gordon calmly began to eat. Kate left him alone, rightly afraid that he would say something else damaging to her authority in public. Instead, she quarreled with the elevator operator, who explained that she couldn’t help just then; the maintenance crew was busy elsewhere.

“Did you even hear who I am? Send them to fix our elevator and let them deal with the other problem afterward!” Catherine raged. In her agitation she sometimes leaned toward the speaker, pressing her magnificent backside against Gordon. He placidly finished his burger while the boss scolded the operator, having secured his own immunity by fighting back in a way the elevator operator could not. Deep down Kate was actually gentle; that was why she tried to appear especially formidable everywhere except at home. It was self-defense. But Gordon had felt the weakness in her. Especially after she had stood on all fours beneath his desk, hiding her head like an ostrich and allowing him to spank her.
