Emily and Ryan had only been in the small Nebraska town for two weeks when the invitation came.
She’d been standing in the produce aisle at the little grocery store, still trying to figure out which brand of coffee Ryan liked, when three women approached her with warm smiles. They introduced themselves as Wanda, Sarah, and Lisa, all active in the local Baptist church. Within minutes they had invited her to their book club.
“It’s just a friendly group of ladies,” Wanda had said. “We meet every other Tuesday. You’ll love it.”
Emily had said yes before she even thought about it. She was lonely, and Ryan had been encouraging her to get out and meet people.
The first meeting had been exactly what she expected — twelve women sitting in Wanda’s beautifully decorated living room, discussing a popular Christian fiction novel. Everyone was kind. Everyone seemed normal. Emily left feeling hopeful that she might actually make real friends here.
But the second meeting was different.
The same twelve women gathered again in Wanda’s spacious living room. The discussion of the book wrapped up quickly. Then Wanda stood up, a sly little smile playing on her lips. “Alright, ladies ... time for the real meeting.”
The room instantly changed. The polite, church-lady atmosphere vanished. Every woman turned to look at Emily with an expression she had never seen before — part curiosity, part hunger, part knowing.
Wanda walked over and placed a gentle hand on Emily’s shoulder.
“Emily, sweetheart ... the book club is just our cover. We’re all hot wives. Every woman in this room has been with men other than her husband — some with their husband’s full knowledge and encouragement.”
Emily’s stomach dropped.
Wanda’s voice stayed soft, almost motherly.
“Jackson has been asking about you ever since you moved to town. He’s very interested in welcoming you ... properly.” Emily’s heart hammered so hard she could hear it in her ears. She opened her mouth, but no words came out. All she could manage was one stunned whisper.
“ ... What?”
Emily couldn’t feel her legs as Wanda gently led her out the front door.
A sleek black SUV sat running in the driveway, the windows darkly tinted. Jackson was already behind the wheel.
Wanda kissed Emily’s cheek like it was the most natural thing in the world.
“You’ll be fine, sweetheart. Just breathe. No one will ever know unless you want them to.”
The passenger door closed with a soft click. Emily sat frozen, her modest skirt suddenly feeling too short, her blouse too tight. Her hands wouldn’t stop shaking in her lap.
Jackson didn’t speak right away. He simply drove the short distance to the edge of town and pulled into the driveway of a beautiful two-story Victorian bed and breakfast.
When he turned off the engine, he finally looked at her. “Before we go inside,” he said, his voice low and calm, “I need you to tell me something, Emily.”
He reached over and gently lifted her chin so she had to meet his eyes.
“Do you want me to take you home right now? Or do you want to see what you’ve been missing?”
Emily’s mouth went dry. She could still hear Wanda’s words echoing in her head: We’re all hot wives.
Her conservative Christian upbringing screamed at her to say “take me home.” But something else — something darker and far more curious — kept her glued to the seat.
“I ... I don’t know,” she whispered.
Jackson’s thumb brushed lightly across her cheek.
“Then let me show you. If you want me to stop at any time, just say the word. I promise.”
He got out, walked around, and opened her door. Emily’s legs felt like jelly as she stepped out.
They walked up the stairs in silence. He led her into a private suite on the second floor. The moment the door clicked shut behind them, the air felt thicker.
Jackson didn’t rush her. He simply stood close, studying her face.
“You’re trembling,” he said softly.
“I’ve never ... I’m married,” she breathed, the words barely audible.
“I know.” His fingers lightly traced her jawline. “That’s what makes this exciting for some of us.”
He leaned in slowly, giving her every chance to pull away. When his lips finally brushed hers, Emily stiffened, but she didn’t move back.
His kiss was patient. Gentle at first, then deeper. One hand slid down her side, resting on her hip. The other moved to the front of her blouse, his thumb brushing over her nipple through the fabric.
Emily gasped against his mouth.
Jackson smiled against her lips. “Still want me to stop?” She should have said yes.
Instead, she whispered something she never thought she’d say:
“ ... No.”
Jackson didn’t rush. He kissed her again, slower this time, letting her get used to the feel of a man who wasn’t her husband. His hand stayed on her hip, thumb tracing small circles through her skirt, while his other hand gently squeezed her breast.
Emily’s breathing grew shallow. Every time his thumb brushed her nipple, a spark shot straight between her legs. She hated how good it felt.
His mouth moved to her neck, kissing just below her ear. “Tell me if you want me to stop,” he whispered, his breath hot against her skin.
She didn’t answer. She couldn’t.
Jackson slowly walked her backward until her legs bumped the edge of the large four-poster bed. He eased her down onto it, never breaking eye contact. Then he knelt in front of her, his hands sliding up her thighs, pushing her skirt higher. When his fingers reached the edge of her panties, he looked up at her, silently asking permission.
Emily’s heart was pounding so hard she could barely think. She gave the smallest nod.
