The lake house had never felt more like home.
It was early autumn now, and the leaves around Lake of the Woods were beginning to turn gold and crimson. The air had a crisp bite in the evenings, but inside the house the warmth came from bodies, laughter, and the growing bond that tied all eight of them together.
Mariah had given birth two weeks earlier — a healthy baby boy they had all agreed to name Elijah. To the outside world, he was Jacob Matthews’ son. In private, they all knew the truth ran deeper. Elijah was light-skinned enough that the resemblance to Jacob could still pass, especially to those who weren’t looking closely. But he had inherited Tyrese’s striking eyes and strong nose — features that became more noticeable every day. The group had embraced it without hesitation. Elijah was theirs — raised collectively in secret, loved fiercely by every member of their unusual family.
On this particular Friday night, the entire group had gathered again. Mariah rested on the large sectional with Elijah sleeping peacefully against her chest. Pam sat beside her, gently stroking the baby’s tiny hand. Mary Ann and Sarah were in the kitchen, pouring wine and preparing a late dinner.
The men — Dale, Tyrese, Marcus, and Jamal — moved comfortably around the house, shirtless and relaxed, their powerful bodies a constant reminder of the pleasure they provided.
Sarah leaned against the counter, watching the scene with a soft, contented smile. She had changed the most in the last few months. The shy, nervous pastor’s wife who had first joined their Tuesday coffees was gone. In her place stood a confident, hungry woman who now craved the weekend escapes as much as the others.
“I still can’t believe this is my life,” Sarah said quietly to Mary Ann. “Last Sunday I sat in church holding Jay’s hand while he prayed for our marriage. Tonight I’m here, already wet just thinking about what’s going to happen after dinner.”
Mary Ann chuckled and handed her a glass of red wine. “You’re doing beautifully. The guilt fades, doesn’t it?”
Sarah nodded. “It does. I still love Jay. He’s a good man. But this...” She gestured toward the living room where Tyrese was playfully kissing Mariah’s neck while she nursed Elijah. “This is where I feel truly alive.”
Before Mary Ann could respond, both their phones buzzed at the same time. Pam’s and Mariah’s followed seconds later.
The messages were from their husbands — a group text this time.
Jim: “Exciting news from leadership tonight! We’ve decided to expand the pastoral team again. We’re bringing in a new Associate Pastor focused on Youth and Young Adults. His name is Pastor Ethan Reynolds, 29 years old. His wife, Lauren, is 26. They’re a sharp, energetic couple from Springfield. They’ll be moving here in about three weeks. Ladies — we’d love for you to do what you do best and take Lauren under your wings. Invite her to your Tuesday coffees and help her settle into church life.”
The four women read the text in silence.
Then, one by one, sly, wicked smiles spread across their faces.
Mary Ann was the first to speak, her voice dripping with dark amusement. “Another one...”
Pam laughed softly, shaking her head. “Pastor Ethan Reynolds and his wife Lauren. If our husbands only knew how well we ‘take women under our wings’...”
Sarah’s eyes sparkled with fresh hunger. “Twenty-six years old. Young, probably still idealistic about ministry marriage. This is going to be fun.”
Mariah looked down at little Elijah, then back up at the group with a knowing grin. “Poor Lauren has no idea what’s coming. We’ll start with coffee ... and end with her on her knees in the basement or spread out on this couch.”
Mary Ann raised her wine glass toward the others, her smile slow and dangerous.
“To Lauren Reynolds. May she find everything she’s been missing ... right here with us.”
