It was the last Sunday in August, at 8:00 a.m. The house was full of activity. Everyone was getting ready for church. The Carter’s had a long drive, as their church was located an hour away, west of their homestead. A small church of likeminded homestead people. A Reformed Church, very conservative.
Two days had passed since the unplanned meeting with James at the hardware store. Annie looked at herself in the bathroom mirror as she braided her hair, still in just her bra and underwear, the thick curves of her body on display for absolutely no one. Mathias was in the kitchen eating breakfast and firmly commanding the children to pick up the pace so they wouldn’t be late.
Nehemiah and David were finishing up milking the cows in the barn. Elizabeth was helping her 3 young sisters get their clothes and hair ready. They still had an hour to get everything done and ready to leave for church in the 15 passenger van.
James had just woken up a few minutes ago when he heard the noises coming from the living room. His roommate Chris was up and ready to hit the YMCA gym to lift weights and get some shooting practice in for basketball.
Chris, James’ friend since they were in their late teens, had met at a sports bar when James and Annie were dating in the late 90s. They remained very good friends even after James went back to Texas after Annie broke up with him. Chris was an old school black guy. He was 6’3” and 225 pounds. Very muscular. Kept himself in great shape, so much so that most who looked at him thought he had to be in his early 30s at most. He was always very confident but calm. Proud, but not unhinged or overly aggressive. His demeanor was calm but no nonsense and not afraid to speak his mind.
James came out the spare bedroom door, looking groggy, squinting his eyes, and complaining to Chris.
“Why are you so damn loud, man?”
“Loud? Man, I’m just doing normal shit around the house. Making breakfast for us. I thought you were going back to Texas tomorrow? You don’t look like you getting ready or nothing.”
“Well ... meant to talk to you bout that man. I think I want to stay a bit longer. Talked to my Uncle Rico and he said he’s cool watching the place a few more weeks.”
“Uncle Rico?” Chris laughed. “You have an Uncle Rico? Ha ha ha!”
James chuckled. “Yeah, I know...”
“He still throwing the football over the mountains?”
Chris began laughing hysterically.
“Shut up,” James said, laughing.
“Man ... I mean ... it’s cool. You always welcome here. But what’s so important you gotta stay long ... Ahhhh. I see...
“What?”
“You told me you weren’t gonna try to ruin that bitch’s marriage,” Chris stated in a firm way. “What are you thinking?”
“I’m not trying to ruin her marriage,” James said, laughing.
“What, you stayin’ longer for “just friends? Yeah right, dawg.”
“Whatever man,” James replied as he walked towards the kitchen to grab a drink.
He took his phone from his shorts pocket and opened the Message app. Annie Carter. He stared at the name and thought about texting her. She had been short with him with every message she sent ever since the day he staged the meet up at the hardware store. He opened the conversation and wrote:
“Hey Annie. Did you catch the moon last night?”
He attached a picture of the full moon he took.
“Picture doesn’t do it justice,” James wrote again. “But it was amazing. Thought it would be something the kids would have liked.”
Annie was in the kitchen checking the food they were bringing for the church potluck when her phone went off.
Ping
Annie looked down at her phone sitting on the counter and saw the name on the header. It was James.
“Lizzy, finish this up for me, please. I’ll be right back.”
“Yes, mama.”
Annie read the message and looked at the picture James sent. She had intentionally tried to wean off of conversation with James the past two days. She knew James was wanting to talk about the emotional pull they both felt at the hardware store, and Annie was bent on ignoring it until it all just went away. But she hoped in vain.
“Yeah, we saw it! All of us did. It was amazing. And the stars too,” Annie replied.
“Do you remember that night we stayed up all night and looked at the stars and moon, at Chris’ Grandpa’s house? I don’t think we ever saw the stars so good as that night.”
Annie remembered well. She told her mom she was staying at Rachel’s house, but James took her out on his truck into a campground area that belonged to Chris’ grandfather, to stay the night together.
Annie’s mind flashed back. The memory hit before she could stop it. Jean shorts and underwear laying in the truck bed, riding James’ huge dick as he sat on the opening of the bed. His strong arms lifting her up and down on his cock. A flannel shirt, unbuttoned, over her white tanktop. James pulled out her beautiful perky tits as she bounced up and down. Flat stomach exposed because she wore small fitting clothes back then. The full feeling she felt with him deep inside her pussy– the raw emotion. All came flooding back in her mind. The strong orgasm she had while looking into the stars. Her long blonde hair blowing gently with the gentle breeze. She kissed him deeply midway through her orgasm as she looked into James’ eyes, “I love you.”
Annie forced her mind out of the stupor. “Have to get ready for church,” she said to herself.
Annie didn’t write back. Not then. After the service when everyone was getting seated to eat, she took her phone out of her purse to check if she had missed any messages. One from her friend Kristen about getting together for walking and to pray together. And then the unanswered message from James.
“I do remember,” Annie wrote. “Although there’s things about that night I don’t think is right to remember.”
“No worries, Annie,” James replied. “I was just thinking about the stars and moon we had that night. Incomparable at that property. Have been there a couple of times since. It’s always the best view. Too bad you couldn’t see it again. Maybe his dad would let you and your husband rent it for the evening sometime. I bet I could arrange it and they could just mark the Air BNB booked for that evening and give it to you. I”ll see what I can do.”
“You don’t have to do that,” Annie replied.
“No, it’s cool. You don’t even have to go through me. I’ll just have him write you directly.”
“Thanks, James. I appreciate it.”
Annie and Mathias’ anniversary wouldn’t be until next June, but it wouldn’t hurt to have a night away with him, she thought.
“James...” Annie wrote. “Aren’t you supposed to be going back to Texas soon? Or already have gone back?”
James replied, “Yeah I was going to, but Chris needed me to stay a bit longer to help him with some stuff, and my family back home said they got it taken care of. So I’ll be here a bit longer. Not sure when I’m going back, why?”
“Just wondered,” Annie wrote.
That night, Annie lay awake after Mathias was asleep, holding her phone in her hands but not turning it on. She didn’t like what was happening inside her.
On the following day, Monday, she had begun texting with James early, before Mathias went off to work. Mathias walked into the kitchen while Annie was typing and she was so engulfed in the conversation that Mathias startled her as he walked into the kitchen to say “Good morning, wife.”
“Sorry– everything okay?” Mathias asked.
“Yes ... yeah ... I’m okay. Sorry.”
“You seem to be distracted lately. Anything I need to know about?”
“No, sorry honey. I have just had a lot of stuff going on recently between Kristen and the stuff we still need to get done before the summer is over. I love you.”
They kissed, lovingly, and with a hint of passion and playfulness.
“Why did you marry Daddy again?” their daughter Belle, 6, asked Annie.
Jackson chimed in, “They aren’t getting married every time they kiss, Belle!”
Belle just laughed and ran off into the dining room to play a song on the piano. It was a song to her, anyway.
As the week progressed, Annie fell back into the texting pattern she swore off previously. It was too easy to talk to James. His charm had never left him, and he was even more charming that he was older and more mature.
Annie felt the guilt every time she answered James. And every time she talked to Mathias there was a nervousness to her mannerisms and speech. She still gave Mathias good sex. Really good sex. He couldn’t tell any difference in Annie, except for certain times when she seemed more nervous; those were the times that Annie was in the middle of a conversation with James. She was always texting with someone otherwise, whether it was her mom, her sister, Kristen, or one of the ladies from the church. So it was easy to answer she was talking to someone else if Mathias asked. But the guilt grew stronger.
Upon waking up Friday morning, Annie had decided that she had the strength, at least for today, to tell James that she had to end the conversations. If James wasn’t going to go home soon, she had to initiate a hard cut off. Before it went too far. It had already gone too far at the hardware store. It was already too far with the texting. This wasn’t right.
It was just 5:04 a.m. after Annie had finished brushing her teeth and using the bathroom when she opened her phone to the Messages app. James. She clicked the conversation and walked into the empty kitchen wearing her light blue flowered night gown that barely went to her knees. It wasn’t the most modest but Mathias liked it and gave him easy access to lift up her dress and touch her ass or pussy when the others weren’t looking.
She turned on the small incandescent light above the kitchen sink. On her phone, she clicked the phone icon on the top right to call James. She didn’t care that it was early and that he might be sleeping. James answered, half asleep.
“Hel ... hello?”
“Hey James, it’s Annie.”
“Annie, hey. It’s early. Are you okay? What’s wrong?”
“Sorry if I woke you up. I just needed to get this done soon. I need to talk to you. Today, if you can.
“Yeah, I can do that. Let’s talk.”
“I mean, in person. Can you meet me over at the baseball fields down the road from my house?”
“Yeah, sure. Now?”
“No, after Mathias goes to work. He’s leaving around seven. Can you do about 7:45?
“Yeah, anything, Annie.”
“Okay, thanks James. I’ll see you then.”
“Later, Annie.”
Annie clicked the button to end the call.
“There, it’s halfway over. Just have to finish it once and for all.”
She had thought about just ending it over the phone but somehow convinced herself that it had to be done in person. She told herself that it was the only way that it would stick. Be permanent. To look him in the eyes. She had the strength to do it today. The baseball field was close to home, and public enough that people could see from the road. She was going to get this out of the way before she changed her mind and before her emotions got in the way. The beginning of the day was perfect for this. Ten minutes, she figured, and it would be done. James had to be going home sometime soon, even if it wasn’t this week.
