Amber did not let the silence get comfortable.
“Now the important questions,” she said. “Not the ones I already asked him. The ones I need from you.”
I knew what was coming. I still hoped she would take a scenic route.
“Do you love Tyler?”
She said it flat. No cushion.
“I know the answer,” she said. “I need you to say it to me.”
I looked at her. My oldest friend. The person who called me out sick, made coffee for a man she didn’t trust, and then sat him down for an hour and a half because I couldn’t do it myself. If I lied to her now, the lie would not even have the dignity of being useful.
I paused. I felt the three words leave the hallway where I had been keeping them.
“Yes,” I said. “I love him.”
Amber nodded once. She did not act surprised or triumphant. It was just a box she had already known was checked.
“Now the other one,” she said. “Do you love him more than you love Mike?”
I opened my mouth. Nothing useful came out.
Yes tried to stand up, and no tried to stand up, and maybe tried to stand up, and none of them would take the chair.
I love Mike, and that is not a theory I have to test. I love him for the same reasons I fell in love with him in the first place. He has a good heart. He is loving. He is caring. He is a protector and a provider. He treats me like an equal partner. He respects me. He would do anything for me. He is the type of man who leaves a winning pool game with friends because I said I had a headache that was not a headache. I thought I felt all of those things for him in a straight line pointing to a future. I still feel them. They did not evaporate because another man learned how to open a door in me that I had kept locked.
Tyler is a different sentence. Tyler makes the air feel aimed. Tyler makes my body answer before my brain has finished the meeting. Tyler sent roses and a chain and slept on a couch under a throw that does not cover a person. Tyler also spent yesterday taking my orgasms apart like they were his to schedule. Both of those men are the same man. I said I loved him. I did not know how to weigh that against a good man who has never asked me to write slut on my own skin.
Even if every red flag we have talked about until we were sick of the color turned out to be wrong. Even if he really is the gentleman who showed up last night, got me out of that bar, put me in pajamas, watched over me, and then sat still while Amber took him apart for ninety minutes. Even if all of that is true, it is still wrong.
Mike exists. Mike loves me. Mike does not know. That fact does not get smaller because Tyler was decent on a Thursday night.
“I do not know how to answer that,” I said. “I love Mike. I did not stop. I did not trade one set of reasons for another. I just ... added a problem I cannot do math with.”
“Because of Mike,” Amber said.
“Yes,” I said. “Because of Mike.”
She turned her mug. Empty now. She did not get up to fill it.
