He came back with more bags than two people needed. I met him at the car because standing still made the plug feel even more obvious.
“You were supposed to be resting,” he said.
“I rested. Then I got bored and became useful. Do not get used to it.”
“Too late.”
I took a bag. The plug had been in for an hour, and the fight had gone out of it. The uncomfortable feeling was not gone, but it had settled and become a deep, occupied ache I could walk around if I did not get too ambitious. Every time I reached, or turned too fast, or bent to pick up a bag, it shoved up into me, and my face did something I did not authorize. I bit the inside of my cheek, smiled, and tried to look like a woman who lifts groceries for a living.
Do not give it away, I told myself. Not in the driveway. You decided this, but you do not have to announce it with your walk.
Inside, I did everything I could to keep him from noticing. I acted casual; I was just a nurse who happened to be moving as if she had sat on a secret. I caught him watching anyway, after a reach that made the thing feel huge, and I am sure I must have had a shocked expression appear on my face. He did not ask. He filed it. I filed that he had filed it.
“You are moving like an old dog with arthritis,” he said, finally, lightly.
“I am moving just fine, thank you very much. Maybe it has something to do with your belt.”
He let it go. We started the sides. I worked on the salad while he prepared the potatoes and corn. He told me the butcher had tried to upsell him on a cut he didn’t like. I told him the butcher had sensed weakness. He flicked water at me. I flicked it back and then had to stand very still, because the flicking had caused me to use my hips.
