I looked at the phone—3:47 pm.
Time enough to be an idiot at speed. I could get home, get what I needed, and be
back before he walked in the door with the steaks. Amazon said the boxes had been delivered and Amber would have stacked them by the door. If I was going to do this, it was going to be because I wanted to, when I wanted to and how I wanted to. Not because he had shrugged and called it only a matter of time.
I wanted to give it to him. Something I had never considered giving anyone. Something he could feel, not a sentence over noodles. Appreciation. Trust. The other word, the
one I had said to Amber and felt in his bathroom and had not yet handed him in a
form he could not talk me out of. Love, dressed up as a terrible idea with a jewel

I still had reservations. Large ones. It was going to hurt. Perhaps even more than
last night, though I didn’t really know, and I didn’t want to explore it in too much depth. But even last night I had cum, which in itself was not the type of reassurance a sane woman would accept. God. What is wrong with me?
