We sat in the living room after. The fork was on the shelf. I did not look at it for long.
I told him about the driveway and meeting Gary about his offer to carry a bag that was not heavy. That he knew my name, said that Tyler had called me a special lady, he mentioned the other women, and the part where they stopped coming by. I left out the greasy feeling Gary gave me. He asked questions and did not laugh at me for panicking.
“He used to be different,” Tyler explained. “Before his wife died. He kept the yard. He talked a lot more, took better care of his appearance and his health. After she was gone, he gave up on everything but the minimum. I have had him to dinner a few times. He is sad, depressed, alone. I don’t think there is any happiness left in that house.”
