After, I told him to sit. He had cooked; he had carried me. I would clean up breakfast.
He refused.
We did the dishes together. I washed, and he dried, and just like the night we had dinner at my house, we didn’t get in each other’s way. He knew which cabinet the plates lived in. I knew, after one morning, where he kept the soap. It felt normal in a way that scared me more than the belt, like we had been doing this forever. Complementing each other. A rinse when his hands were full. A towel when mine were wet. Jokes about the potatoes that had not survived my crying.
I was up to my wrists in soap and grease when he leaned in and kissed me. Deep. Not a peck over a sink. I kissed him back and went weak with it, the passion in it out of proportion to a breakfast plate.
