He had moved the tray to the bed. Coffee still hot enough to count. The omelet had survived. The potatoes not so much. I got in bd beside him, careful on one hip, and we ate.
It did not stay solemn. He complained that I had cried on the bacon. I told him the bacon had started it. He stole one of the now limp potatoes off my plate and denied it with his mouth full. I laughed. The laugh stayed. Somewhere between the coffee and the last of the eggs, the peace came back, the same peace from the massage, thinner in daylight and still real.
