The bathroom light was unkind, which I respected. I used the toilet. I ran a washcloth under cold water and held it to my face until the blotching agreed to negotiate. Then I looked.
I looked wrecked. My eyes were swollen and bloodshot. My nose was red and raw from all the times I had wiped it. My hair looked like a rat’s nest. The woman in the glass had cried like a child and was now expected to sit down and eat bacon. I did not know what he could see in her. Not a mystery in the flattering sense. A genuine confusion. He had told me I was perfect, beautiful inside and out. He had said those words to this face.
The love hit while I was still looking at her.
