When it was quiet enough to be a silence, he spoke.
“I am sorry,” he said. “For what happened to you before and for what I did yesterday. If I had known, I would have handled things differently. I apologize. I will make it up to you, and we will never have to go through that again. I cannot change the past, but I can tell you this. Now that it has happened, now that I have spent this time with you, I cannot let you go. I will not.”
I made a sound. Not a word, because I did not know what to say, and I am not sure I could have spoken if I had tried.
“You are perfect,” he said. “Beautiful. Inside and out. You are not broken.”
“I am.” It came out small and certain. “You were not there. You do not know. I am, and I know, I just like I know, that I deserved everything that happened yesterday and more. You were right to punish me, and I could not even do that right.”
He shushed me. A finger against my mouth, gentle, the way you stop a person who is about to argue with a fever. Then he kissed me like he was putting an end to the argument I had been having with myself since I opened my eyes.
