Chapter 4

Erotica Sex Story: Chapter 4 - Amy and Alex were high school sweethearts. Florida was supposed to be the upgrade: a gate, a country club, and a zip code that wasn't Boise. When she takes up tennis, the brochure promises courts and cocktails. Nobody mentioned the real game.

The courts were dead. Forty-five minutes to close. I had left the kitchen to hit balls until the insult left my body.

I went up the pro shop steps for a machine and stopped dead.

“Hey, girl.”

Gloria. Alone on the veranda, already mid-glass of the same white she drank by the bottle on gossip afternoons. Home uniform. White one-piece. Arms and legs dark from a life in the sun. Makeup that belonged on a date, not a tennis court.

“Oh. Hey...” It came out too high. “Thought I’d get some balls in.”

She tipped the glass at the empty chair.

“Sit. Drink first.”

The laugh after it was the practice laugh. The one that meant we were never going to get any better.

Below us, the courts were lit and empty, green behind the fence, the whole place holding its breath.

A waiter slid in from behind. The same one who kept our glasses full on the days we should have been practicing. My usual. He said my name and nothing else. Set the glass down and was gone. One more line on an invoice Alex would complain about in a month.

First time alone with any of them. Practices. Matches. The chat. Always a group. The air went thin.

“Everything alright, girlie?”

She was the kind of woman who could smell a cracked thing from across a table.

“Yeah. I think so.”

Too fast. She heard the kitchen in it.

“I’m here if you need an ear.”

The wine sat between us long enough for the offer to go stale.

“Sorry if the Tommy stuff freaked you out.”

Soft. Almost careful. Not the woman from the chat.

“It was surprising,” I said, and the laugh I put on it didn’t help.

“I suppose I went immune.” She tipped the glass. “Forgot it wasn’t normal.”

I should have left it. Got up. Gone for the ball machine I came for.

The pause stretched until I filled it.

“No guilt though?”

It came out on its own. Too sharp. Too much like I was asking for instructions.

“Of course there was. At first.” The grin after it was worse than the words. “Then I got tired of being polite. Richard and I went quiet and stayed there. The drive didn’t.”

Richard. The husband had a name now.

She crossed her legs and took another sip.

“I wasted my thirties being good. Forties. Fifties.”

She stopped, as if she had only now heard it out loud.

“Tommy didn’t make me young.” A pause. “He just made sitting around look stupid.”

I should have left it there. Listening to a woman my mother’s age talk about infidelity was already too much. Worse, because I was sitting at the starting line of the same road.

She turned it on me before I found the nerve to ask how Beth and Jill had gotten pulled in.

“So, what’s your story, girl?”

“Well...”

The pro shop door screamed before I could finish. Same ugly squeak as practice. I knew it before I saw him.

We both turned.

Tommy.

Same bored walk. Same staff shorts. He closed the distance too fast. I nearly fumbled the glass before I had a name for why.

His eyes went to Gloria first. Then to me. Then to the teal I had worn every week; some stupid part of me still steered by a compliment that probably hadn’t even been sincere.

He grinned when he said it. Not at the table. At me.

“Hey, Amy. That color’s still fire.”

Then Gloria. Almost polite.

“Ready for your lesson?”

Gloria looked at me. Not long. Long enough to watch the logistics land.

Not a hotel. Not a house inside the gates with the husband on the course or in an airport. The pro shop. A lesson if anybody asked.

She stood. Smoothed the suit. Touched my shoulder. The smile was already on.

“Rain check on the ear, girlie.”
