Valerie had built a house on rules.
No shoes on the couch. No guests after ten. Dishes in the sink before bed, not in the morning, because morning was how sloppiness learned to live somewhere. No locked doors she didn’t have a key for. She had a key to Rhett’s room and a key to the hall bath and a key to the garage side door that Marcus never used. She married Marcus when Rhett was sixteen and spent four years making sure the boy understood the shape of her: not his friend, not his mother, not a woman who got caught.
She was the one who grounded. The one who stood in the kitchen light with her arms folded and waited for an explanation. Forty. Dark hair kept in a clip so she looked like a person who ran something. A mouth that had learned to stay kind for Marcus and sharp for everyone else.
Rhett turned twenty in March. In April he put her life on the kitchen table and ruined the architecture.
The phone was his, not hers. Face up, next to the fruit bowl, in a kitchen that smelled like coffee and the lemon cleaner she used when she was angry. Afternoon light laid a pale rectangle across the apples. He had set the phone down like mail.
“Watch it.”
She almost said watch your mouth. Then she saw the thumbnail.
Garage. Night. The neighbor’s white pickup nosed into the frame the way it had been the night she swore it was a jump-start. Her own back. Hair out of the clip. A man’s hand on her hip that was not Marcus’s hand.
She did not sit. Sitting would have looked like surrender. She pressed play with a finger that wanted to be steady.
Thirty-eight seconds.
The camera angle was the side door. Rhett’s door. He had stood in the dark crack and filmed her. He had not shaken. The frame did not bounce. He had composed her. That was the first mean thing, and it landed harder than the neighbor’s zipper, harder than her own voice on the little speaker saying hurry in a register she had never used in this kitchen.
Thirty-eight seconds was long enough to see her knees adjust on the concrete. Long enough to hear a sound she would have denied under oath. The clip ended on the black of someone’s shirt.
Rhett leaned on the opposite counter and folded his arms too. Mirroring her on purpose. Twenty. Taller than Marcus already. The gray hoodie he lived in.
“Again,” he said, and started it with his thumb.
The second pass was worse. Heat moved through her, low and humiliating, a slick traitor between her legs that had no business arriving at three in the afternoon while a boy she had grounded for a beer watched her watch herself. She hated him for standing close enough to smell if she was lying about it.
“Delete it.”
“No.”
“Rhett.”
“You said my name like that when I was seventeen and I left a dish in the sink.” He nodded at the phone. “Say it again. See if it works.”
It didn’t.
