Chapter 4: A Kiss Behind the Raised Lid

Erotica Sex Story: Chapter 4: A Kiss Behind the Raised Lid - Margot is 48, a cellist who stopped playing the day she married. Her husband Edmund, 57, looks at his Steinway more than he's looked at her in years. So she starts knocking it out of tune, just enough to bring Ansel, the 25-year-old tuner with perfect pitch and patient hands, back every Thursday while Edmund works across the courtyard. A slow-burn affair of near-misses, stolen afternoons and a recital with forty guests. Can she stay quiet until the final chord?

Thirty days. A month, near enough, and the rain had set in as if it meant to stay for all of it.

At six in the morning, standing in the dressing room with the lake still dark behind the blind, I made a decision I’d have laughed at in September. I took down a jersey wrap dress the colour of red wine, soft, heavy, clinging where it touched, and I put it on over nothing at all. No bra. No knickers. I tied the knot at my hip and stood very still and felt the jersey move against my bare skin when I breathed.

Nobody would know. That was what I told myself. It was true, and it was not the point.

Ilse was in the kitchen when I came down, wiping the marble.

“Next Thursday I cannot come, Mrs. Hale. The dentist. They move me.” She said dentist as if it were a regime she’d lived under.

“That’s fine, Ilse. We’ll survive.”

She looked at the wine-coloured dress for a moment, then at my face, then went back to the marble.

Ansel came at ten. Rain streamed off his jacket onto the doormat and he shook his hair out of his eyes, and I held out the tuning fork on my open palm before he’d even got his tool roll down.

“You left this.”

He looked at it. Then at me. He didn’t take it.

“Keep it,” he said.

I closed my hand. The steel was warm from my pocket. I didn’t ask him whether he knew what I’d done with it. I think he’d known the moment he decided to leave it.

The blinds across the courtyard were up, but the rain was coming down so thickly now that the boathouse was only a lit shape swimming behind grey water. Edmund was a smudge. I could have been anyone. Ansel propped the lid high on the long stick, and the bench end of the Steinway vanished from the world.

At half past ten Ilse took the ironing up to the laundry room at the far end of the bedroom corridor, out of sight of the gallery, and I heard her humming start there, faint through two walls, Lehár again.

He worked for an hour without speaking. I didn’t sit with him this time. I stood at the curve of the rim, just inside the shelter of the lid, and watched, and he let me. My feet were bare on the rug. The jersey lay against my nipples and every time I shifted they tightened. I was absolutely certain he could see it. He didn’t look.

He struck the last unison, listened, gave the pin one breath of a turn.

Then he set the lever down on the felt, sat back, and played a chord.

D-flat major. Low and full, both hands, his foot pressing the sustain pedal all the way down. The chord Edmund’s nocturne rests on, the one he’d played at me for years without once meaning it. Under Ansel’s hands it opened out into the room like something unfolding its wings, all the strings sympathising, the whole huge body of the piano ringing.

He took his hands off the keys. The pedal stayed down. The sound hung in the air, enormous, beginning its long decay.

He stood up and turned toward me.

“Kiss me until you can’t hear it,” he said.

I didn’t answer. I was already there.

His mouth was warmer than I’d imagined, and I had imagined it in detail. He kissed me slowly at first, carefully, the way he did everything, a question and then another question. The chord roared softly around us. Somewhere overhead, very faint, Ilse’s humming went on over the hiss of the iron. I tasted coffee, and rain, and under it just him. My hand found the back of his neck and his hair was damp.

Then it stopped being slow.
