Akash was too restless to follow the usual auto-rickshaw routine the next morning. The thought of spending that evening alone with Sonia at the mall had him buzzing with energy. Instead of taking a rickshaw, he decided to drive his car to work.
To keep their arrangement hidden from the branch staff—and because finding open parking anywhere near the congested Andheri branch was a complete nightmare—he had parked the car nearly a kilometre away at a secure roadside spot. The total lack of daily parking slots in the commercial hub was the exact reason Akash usually stuck to their auto-rickshaw routine. At 5:00 PM, Akash wrapped up his work and left first. Exactly five minutes later, Sonia left the branch alone, casually walking to the nearest stand to catch a quick rickshaw ride to his location.
When the rickshaw pulled up, Sonia stepped out and quickly slid into the front passenger seat next to Akash.
Sonia: It was a great idea to bring the car today.
Akash: I was thinking the exact same thing. I didn’t want us hunting for an empty auto in this madness tonight.
They drove down the highway toward Oberoi Mall. Inside the shopping complex, Akash kept his promise. He took her straight to the clothing boutiques and accessory shops. Sonia selected a nice top and a stylish handbag. When they reached the cash counter, Akash swiped his card without a moment’s hesitation, eager to spend his money on her.
After shopping, they went up to the crowded food court to grab a quick bite. They sat at a corner table away from the main rush.
Sonia: Thank you, Akash. But you really didn’t have to spend so much.
Akash: I wanted to. You’re the only person who actually understands me.
Sonia: Na ... Your girl and your parents understand you well enough.
Akash: She didn’t understand anything.
Sonia: Oh!
Akash: Even my parents look at me like I am an embarrassment to them.
Seeing his mood drop, Sonia reached across the table and firmly held his wrist.
Sonia: Don’t worry. They will understand eventually what a gem of a person you are.
Akash: You think so? I don’t think so ... I believe no one understands me the way you do.
Sonia: Oh really? And how would you know that?
Akash: Look at it this way—you have such a busy life managing your son and the office, but you still took out time for me today. My ex hardly ever agreed to even meet me for a cup of coffee.
Sonia: Hey, I came here for the shopping. 😉
Akash: I know you came for me ... shopping is just an excuse. But you will also leave me like the others. Just look at where am I in my life right now.
Sonia: You are improving every day, Akash. Don’t be so negative about yourself.
Akash: Look at me, Sonia. A guy with no degree working as sub-staff, while all my cousins are cracking engineering and MBA degrees.
Sonia: Akash, you are completing your studies now. It is never too late to start fresh. And remember, I am right here beside you. I have seen a bit more of life than you have. You are completely free to call or message me whenever you feel down or need some help.
Akash: And what if I just feel like talking to you? No reason.
Sonia: Of course you can, I am always there for you ... well, after my household duties are wrapped up, that is.
She let out a soft, teasing laugh that instantly eased the heavy tension between them.
Akash: Ah, I understand, Sonia. In fact, it is me who should thank you for coming out tonight. You completely made my day.
Sonia: I genuinely believe in the man in you, Akash. You will surely make everyone proud one day, including your parents. Just give it time.
Akash: Sonia, you are the best thing that has happened to me in a long time. Otherwise, who even cares about a sub-staff in a bank.
Sonia: Don’t get back into that dark zone again, Akash.
Sonia’s phone suddenly rang. It was her son.
Sonia: Yes, sweetie?
Son: Mom, you’re late today. When are you coming back?
Sonia: I just got caught up with some work at the bank today, honey. I’ve already left the office and I’m on my way home now. Finish your homework, I’ll be there soon.
She hung up the phone, her maternal tone disappearing as she looked across the table at Akash.
Sonia: That’s enough for the day, Akash. Let’s leave.
Akash wanted more time with her, but he didn’t argue. He picked up the shopping bags and led the way down to the dim parking level of the mall. They walked over to his car and sat inside. Surrounded by the shadows of the concrete pillars and the absolute quiet of the secluded parking level, Akash turned to look at her before turning the ignition key.
Akash: Thank you once again for coming here with me today, Sonia. Seriously. It completely cheered me up.
Sonia smiled at him and gave him a playful wink.
Akash leaned in closer across the seats. Sonia leaned forward too, meeting him halfway. They kissed for the first time. It was an intense kiss that broke through months of boundaries. Akash’s hand moved to the side of her neck, guiding her mouth as their lips locked deeply. Sonia completely lost herself, leaning far across the center console as the movement pulled her top tight against her chest. His fingers slowly slid down from her neck, moving past her shoulder and tracing down her side until they slipped under the edge of her top. His hand rested flat against her waist, feeling the warmth of her bare skin.
Suddenly, she snapped back to her senses and gently pushed him back, breathing a little hard.
Sonia: I am getting late, Akash. My son is waiting. Let’s leave.
