Yuri carried his harsh punishment through to the end. He spoke to Omar’s employers, reminded them that he knew about the old man’s illegal status, and Omar was fired. Well, “a victory is incomplete until another soul has witnessed it,” so naturally Yuri shared the news of the janitor’s dismissal with his wife. Annette’s face twitched; her jaw tightened.
“You’re wrong, Yuri. Taking a weak, wretched man’s shelter and work away is a sin you’ll have to carry. Remember karma.”
Having said her piece, she gave her husband no chance to answer, turned, and went into the other room. Ann had passed sentence on her husband; there was no appeal. But Yuri noticed she hadn’t asked him to get the old man’s job back. It seemed that, unconsciously, they had both decided their lives could return to normal only without Omar.
The next day the couple went for a walk. They set off past beautiful buildings toward the nearest grand old skyscraper. A hard frost had struck: everything was chilled through, glazed over, street and streetcar alike. Mustaches and beards had turned silver, and everyone carried their breath before them like airy cotton candy on a stick. Their hearts were light.
Suddenly a painfully familiar cry came from an alleyway. Omar’s cry. The couple exchanged looks. Other voices could be heard in the alley too. Their speech was guttural, their laughter crowlike. Annette was the first to head toward the noisy trouble. Cursing, Yuri followed.
“Don’t, stop it, what have I done to you?!” Omar whined. He lay on the pavement with teenagers swarming around him. His open bags were scattered everywhere, his belongings spilled across the snow. Some of the boys had sticks; they ran up to Omar, struck him, and darted away before he could retaliate. Every time the vagrant tried to get up, one of them tripped him.
