“Hi, Mr. Dunn,” Cathy said, shaking the rainwater off her umbrella as she stood under the little portico.
Reena’s father smiled and opened the door for her. “Hi, Cathy. I’m afraid you just missed Reena. Her Mom took her to Roosevelt Field to do some shopping.”
“Oh.” She couldn’t hide her disappointment. “I got a new Nintendo cartridge I wanted to show her. Do you know when she’ll be back?”
“Well, it can’t be too late,” he said, closing the door behind her and glancing at his watch. “The mall closes in another hour. You’re welcome to wait, if you like.”
She brightened. “If you don’t mind...”
“No trouble at all. Make yourself at home.”
“Thanks!” Cathy shucked her raincoat and hung it in the foyer as Terry Dunn went back to the living room and his newspaper. A tall, lean man with salt-and-pepper hair, he had always been friendly to Cathy. Reena had told Cathy that sometimes her mother got on his case about nothing at all, and he would just quietly put up with it and try to reason with her, but when her mother got into one of those moods, “all that Irish redhead temper comes out.” Cathy took her totebag into the living room, where Terry looked up from his newspaper and smiled again at her. “Plenty of food and stuff in the refrigerator, so don’t be shy if you’re hungry.”
“I’m okay, thanks,” she said, smiling prettily. “I’m just going to go down to the rec room and practice some Nintendo, if that’s okay.”
“Be my guest.” He waved at her, and she noticed the glass on the end table next to his reading chair. It was half-filled with what she knew was bourbon. Reena had also told her that on Fridays, her dad sometimes sat and quietly drank all evening, often falling asleep in the easy chair. Cathy remembered the gangbang she’d watched Julie in two weeks before, and how Julie had gotten so drunk. She wondered if that was a hereditary thing.
As she went down the stairs to the rec room, all of her memories of that hedonistic Friday night and the next morning flooded back ... as if they were ever far from her fevered young mind. She and Reena had been virtually unable to keep their hands off each other ever since that night of lesbian pleasure and the next morning, when Cathy had slurped and licked Reena’s juicy, freshly fucked young cunt clean of all the cum Hank had deposited there.
She switched on the video monitor and took out her Nintendo cartridge. The only problem was that seeing Reena get her first hard cock had made Cathy all the more anxious to get one for herself ... and she was making no progress at all in attracting a guy she found attractive. How had Julie ever gotten started, she wondered? Julie didn’t have much in the way of tits, either.
Cathy activated the Nintendo, picked up the control pad, and settled comfortably onto the carpet in front of the television. She was wearing a year-old warmup sweatsuit that was too small for workouts, but quite comfortable for hanging out.
She got caught up in the game quickly and didn’t realize how much time had passed until she heard the telephone ring, startling her out of her concentration. Terry Dunn, still upstairs, answered it on the third ring, and she could hear his quiet voice, but not his words.
The clock on the VCR timer said almost two hours had passed since her arrival. Cathy stood and stretched, feeling the faded blue cotton of her sweatpants snugging into her tiny butt.
“Cathy?”
She turned and stared up at the top of the stairs, where Terry Dunn stood — and almost for the first time realized what a truly handsome man he was.
“That was Reena’s Mom --”
She noted that he hadn’t called Bridget “my wife.”
“-- and they seem to have had a change in plans. They’re going to see the new Kevin Costner movie at the multiplex and probably won’t be back until quite late.”
She also noticed how “quite late” had a sour sound to it.
“I’m sorry.”
“That’s okay, Mr. Dunn. I’ll catch up with her tomorrow!” She quickly switched off the television and Nintendo and stowed the cartridge back in her tote bag. She scurried up the stairs, where a smiling and slightly swaying Terry Dunn held the door for her. She could smell the bourbon now.
“I don’t mean to chase you,” he said, quickly. “I just figure you’ve got better things to do than hang around a big old empty house with your best friend’s old man.”
She laughed. “Oh, Mr. Dunn, I spend so much time here that I feel like this is almost home for me. And you and Mrs. Dunn always make me feel like part of the family --”
He muttered something. It almost sounded to Cathy like “more than she does for me.”
“Is everything okay, Mr. Dunn?”
He shook his head as if to clear it and smiled again. “And you’re like one of the family to me, Cathy.” He half-chuckled. “It’s funny, but seeing you dressed in that sweatsuit reminds me so much of when Julie was your age and got into fitness so much. She seemed to live in her sweatsuit.” His face clouded for a moment.
“Mr. Dunn?”
His gaze focused on her again.
“Mr. Dunn, have you had anything to eat tonight?”
He shook his head. “No, no, too much trouble to make dinner for myself.”
“I’ll tell you what — you sit down and I’ll make you a sandwich.”
“What kind of sandwich?”
“I’ll surprise you. Okay?”
He nodded and turned toward the living room. He seemed to have trouble with his balance. Cathy took his hand and led him to the chair. A half-empty bottle of Jack Daniels sat on the side table.
As he settled into the chair, his hand came up to brush her hair. He caressed the top of her head — she had two pigtails tonight — and smiled weakly at her. “Sorry,” he mumbled. “Too much to drink. Apologize.”
“It’s okay. I’ll make you a sandwich.”
Cathy strode into the kitchen and began making a ham-and-cheese sandwich for her best friend’s handsome dad. She put some potato chips on a tray and grabbed a bottle of ginger ale, then brought the tray into the living room.
He was looking at her oddly. “Just like Julie used to do when we were home alone and I was drowning my sorrows. Fix me a bite to eat, keep me company, and...” He bit off the rest of it.
And what? Cathy wondered.
She put the tray on the side table for him. He looked at the tray, then at Cathy, standing before him. “Same old thing,” he muttered. “Just like then. Just couldn’t keep her happy.” He reached for the potato chips.
“Julie?”
“No, not Julie — her mother. Just like they say about redheads, y’know? Julie knew about it, too. Even caught her with one of them here in the middle of the afternoon.” He jammed some chips into his mouth, began methodically chewing, then swallowed. “My uncle warned me. Told me never to marry a redhead, because she’ll always want more.”
“More money?”
“More men. Never gets enough.”
“Mrs. Dunn?”
He nodded. “Bridget the sex machine. Always stepping out on me, always looking for more men, bigger men, men to give her what she wants all the time.”
Cathy unscrewed the cap on the ginger ale and handed it to him. He took a long pull on the bottle. “Thanks, Jul — Cathy. Damn, I shouldn’t be telling you this stuff. I’m sorry.”
“Have you talked to anyone about it?”
“Tried talking to Bridget, tried to get her to go to counselling with me, work it out. Wouldn’t hear a word of it. And who can I talk to? The family would laugh and --”
“You can talk to me. You have to talk to someone.”
He took a big bite of the sandwich, chewed it slowly, then washed it down with more ginger ale. “Good sandwich. Thank you.”
She bowed deeply, her best end-of-the-routine bow. “It is my pleasure.”
“Not much of one, I’m sure.”
“It must be frustrating for you to have your wife going with other men and leaving you out in the cold.”
