The drive to Meridian blurred past in a haze of stop signs and traffic lights, her hands gripping the wheel with white knuckles. The sun was beginning its slow descent, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, but Sarah didn’t notice any
of it. All she could see was the dark entrance of the Adult Book Store, pulling her forward like a current.
She parked in the same spot as before. Killed the engine. Sat there for exactly three seconds before she pushed the door open.
The bell jingled. The smell hit her—stale smoke, dust, that cheap vanilla air freshener.
Earl looked up from his newspaper, and his eyebrows lifted just a fraction when he recognized her.
“Back again,” he said. Not a question.
Sarah walked to the counter, her voice steadier than she felt. “Tokens.”
He studied her for a moment, then reached under the counter and slid a handful across the worn wood. “Ten free. How do you want to do it this time?”
“What do you mean?”
“Last time you used the booth on the left.” He nodded toward the hallway. “There’s a booth on the right side too. There is a hole on each side.”
Sarah’s pulse kicked. “Why would they prefer it?”
His voice stayed flat, matter-of-fact. “Two men can use it at the same time, if that’s what a woman’s looking for.”
The words landed in her stomach like a stone dropping into still water. Two at once. The thought should have horrified her—she’d never even fantasized about something that filthy, that obscene. But her cunt throbbed, a dull, insistent ache that pulsed with every heartbeat.
“Which booth?” she heard herself ask.
“Last door on the right. Green light’s on.”
She took the tokens. Her hand was shaking. She didn’t care.
The hallway was the same—sickly yellow light, shadows pooling in the corners. The booth at the end of the right side had a green glow above the door, and she slid three tokens into the slot.
The door clicked open.
This room was bigger. Maybe five feet by five, with the same bench bolted to the floor, the same stack of paper towels, the same screen flickering with porn she didn’t watch.
But there was a hole in the wall on the left and one on the right.
She slid the covers aside. Dark. Empty.
Sarah sat on the bench, knees together, hands clasped in her lap. The silence pressed in around her, broken only by the soft hum of the ventilation system and the distant, muffled sounds of the store outside.
She waited.
The minutes crawled. She checked her phone—3:47 PM. She’d been here for almost ten minutes. Maybe no one was going to come. Maybe she’d made a mistake, driven all the way out here for nothing.
Then she heard it.
Footsteps in the hall. Heavy, deliberate. The door to the booth on the left opened and closed, then the door on the right opened and closed. A weight settled onto the bench.
Sarah held her breath.
The scraping sound was soft at first—wood against wood, something sliding open.
Sarah’s breath caught as she heard it from both sides simultaneously. The small panels on the left and right walls slid back with a dry, wooden groan, revealing the darkness beyond.
She stared at the openings. Two of them. One on each side.
