The water hammered against George’s shoulders, steaming hot, cascading down the broad expanse of his back. He braced one palm against the cool tile and let the heat soak into muscles that had been knotted tight for months.
One more month.
The thought echoed through the steam, a mantra he’d been repeating for weeks now.
He closed his eyes, let the water stream over his face, and let his mind drift.
The promotion. It had to be his. He’d put in the hours—Christ, had he put in the hours. Sixty, seventy-hour weeks, sometimes more. Weekends at the office while Sarah was home alone, doing whatever it was she did when he wasn’t there. He’d missed dinners, missed date nights, missed the easy intimacy they used to share on the couch after a long day.
But it would be worth it.
Next month, when they announced the new regional director position, his name would be on that list. It had to be. He’d sacrificed everything for it—his time, his energy, his marriage, if he was being honest with himself.
The water drummed against his skull. He let out a long, slow breath.
Sarah will understand.
He kept telling himself that. She was a good wife. Patient. Understanding. She’d stuck with him through the lean years, through the stress and the long hours and the nights when he came home too tired to do anything but collapse into bed. She deserved better than what he’d been giving her.
But once the promotion came through, he could cut back. He could be the husband she deserved. Take her on a vacation somewhere warm. Rekindle what they’d lost in the grind of daily life.
His hand drifted to the soap, lathered it between his palms, and began scrubbing his chest. The motion was automatic, muscle memory.
The bookstore.
The thought surfaced unbidden, and he grimaced.
Dave and his fucking ideas. Always pushing boundaries, always looking for a thrill. When Dave had suggested they take Mike to the Adult Book Store as a “going away present,” George had known it was a bad idea. He’d said as much. But Mike had been laughing, already half-drunk, slapping George on the back and saying, “Come on, man. One last adventure before I’m gone.”
And George, weak from exhaustion and the weight of the last two years, had let himself be dragged along.
The inside of that place had been exactly what he expected—dim, smelling of stale smoke and cheap air freshener, the walls lined with videos that made him uncomfortable just glancing at the covers.
He’d kept his eyes forward, hands shoved in his pockets, counting the seconds until they could leave.
Mike had disappeared into one of the back rooms.
Dave had wandered off toward a display of toys, leaving George standing awkwardly near the counter, trying not to look at anything.
The old man behind the register—Earl, according to the nameplate—had given him a long, knowing look.
“First time?”
“No,” George had said. “Just not interested.”
Earl had shrugged. “Most men who say that end up in the booths eventually.”
George had shaken his head. “I’m a married man.”
“So are half the guys who come through that door.”
The conversation had left a sour taste in his mouth. He’d stood there, shifting his weight, until Mike emerged from the back, grinning, holding a small brown paper bag. “Got something to remember this place by,” he’d said, and George hadn’t asked what was in it.
They’d left after ten minutes. Maybe fifteen.
