“Oh baby, you like how they feel, hmm?” Pamela cooed out seductively as the pair of calloused strong hands slid up her calf and over her knee. She blushed hard. He pushed open her leg, she let him as her breath caught.
Frank smiled brightly, as he looked over at the couch and watched Bruce with his head down but also peaking. He decided today would be the day where he would not inconvenience Pamela by making her go to his house, he would come to her, the fact that the wimp of a husband was sitting on the couch made it all the better. The odd thing was the wimp was not crying, he was just sitting there bashfully.
Frank’s command boomed through the Peters’ living room with the proprietary confidence of a man who’d already claimed the space as this own. “Take it out, my horny slut, you know you want it.” Pamela nearly flinched at the sound, but the nervous flutter in her stomach twisted into something hotter, more liquid, as she looked up at him. There was a time when Frank’s voice, all rough edges and uncensored appetite, had frightened her, reminded her that everything that happened between them started as blackmail, as a protection racket conducted with violence and a smile. But now, with her husband sitting meekly across the room and pretending not to watch, it thrilled her.
Was it proximity? The live, unblinking humiliation? She felt her body respond in ways that made her question every assumption she’d had about herself as a wife, as a woman. Yes, she’d agreed to be Frank’s plaything, his words, not hers, because the alternative involved ambulance rides and police reports and a lifetime of explaining things to Bruce’s mother. But here, now, it wasn’t just submission, it was complicity. An exhilarating, wicked complicity.
She could see Bruce peeking through his fingers, his face half hidden by the edge of the Ikea catalog he pretended to study. His cheeks had gone a shade of red that made Pamela’s chest tighten with something like guilt, and then, just as quickly, made her feel impossibly powerful. She parted her knees a little wider, letting Frank’s thick fingers dig into the soft flesh above her thigh. She made a show of it. The air in the room changed, thickened.
She tried not to think about what she was doing. About the fact that sex with Frank had become the most intimate thing in her life, that the shame she felt was less about the infidelity and more about loving the way he could turn her into a spectacle. She tried not to notice the way her own body betrayed her, the way her nipples pressed hard against the inside of her sensible housewife blouse, the way her hands shook as she guided Frank’s. She tried to focus on the transaction, on keeping Bruce safe, on keeping their life together intact, but Frank made it impossible.
“Christ, you’re soaking through already,” Frank growled. He leaned in, so close she could smell the whiskey on his breath, the sweat from his job-site labor, the faintest whiff of mint gum. “You ever get this wet for him?” Pamela’s eyes darted to the side, to Bruce’s hunched figure, and she felt a bolt of electric guilt shoot through her. But Frank’s question wasn’t really a question. He already knew the answer.
She wanted to say something. To reassure Bruce, or apologize, or explain, but the words wouldn’t come. Instead, she arched into Frank’s hand. His other paw squeezed her chin until her mouth opened with a gasp, and he kissed her in a way that felt like a public performance, full of teeth and tongue and purpose.
“Let’s give him a real show,” Frank murmured, loud enough for Bruce to hear. He unbuckled his belt with a taunting deliberation; the clink of the metal buckles a shot fired at the silent man on the couch. Pamela’s breath caught as Frank’s erection bobbed free. He stroked it openly, grinning, then pressed its heavy length against her cheek. “Go on. He’s watching. Show him what a real man tastes like.”
Pamela didn’t need to be told twice. Something inside her, shame, heat, whatever it was, took over. She let her lips part and guided him in, her tongue swirling as she took him deeper than she’d ever managed with Bruce. She heard her husband’s breath hitch, heard the faintest noise of a magazine page crumpling. The humiliation, the loss of control, it was intoxicating.
Frank angled her face so Bruce could see everything, even as Pamela choked and coughed and then steadied herself, her hands gripping Frank’s thighs for leverage. He tapped her on the head approvingly, like she was a pet who’d learned a new trick. She flushed all over, and the wetness between her legs grew unbearable.
When Frank finally let her come up for air, she was dizzy, her mascara already starting to run. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, then looked over at Bruce, searching for anything, anger, disgust, even pity, but he just stared, lips parted, eyes glassy and unfocused. He didn’t even try to cover his arousal.
Frank gave Pamela’s shoulder a squeeze and leaned forward, his voice a low, rolling thunder: “You want more, don’t you?” She nodded, unable to speak. Her body trembled with anticipation, with need, with the impossible thrill of being seen and used and wanted, all at once.
Frank yanked her skirt up around her hips, exposing her plain cotton panties, already transparent with arousal. He hooked a finger through the waistband and tugged them down, not bothering with gentleness. The air hit her skin and she shivered, caught between embarrassment and need.
“Spread ‘em,” Frank said, and Pamela obeyed, knees wide, feet flat on the hardwood. She barely noticed the pain of the position, so intent was she on the feeling of vulnerability, of being open and taken.
Frank lined up and pushed, slow at first, then with a hungry thrust that made Pamela gasp and clutch the edge of the coffee table. He filled her completely, and she felt every inch of it, every humiliating, delicious inch. She heard Bruce whimper, a tiny, involuntary sound, and she looked at him, really looked, as Frank started to move inside her.
The rhythm built, sharp and relentless, and Pamela found herself crying out, not caring who heard or what it meant. Her fingers dug into the table, her body rocked forward with every thrust, her mind empty except for the overwhelming, consuming pulse of pleasure and shame.
Frank bent close to her ear, grunting as he fucked her harder, faster, his hand snaking around to toy with her clit. “That’s it. You take it so good. Say thank you.”
She managed a gasp, her voice ragged but clear: “Thank you, Frank.”
He laughed, the sound echoing through the room, and slammed into her one last time before shuddering with release. He pulled out, not gentle, and tucked himself away, zipping up with a satisfied sigh.
Pamela collapsed forward, dazed, her skin flushed and sticky, her body shivering with aftershocks. She didn’t dare look at Bruce, not yet. Not until she could figure out how to feel about what she’d just done.
Frank patted her on the ass and stood up, stretching his arms over his head like he’d just finished a workout. “Goddamn,” he said. “You’re an animal, Pam.”
Pamela heard herself laugh, the sound wild and strange in her own ears. She smoothed her skirt back down, but made no move to clean herself up, not yet. She turned to look at Bruce, who had yet to move.
For a long time, no one said anything. The only sound was the faint hum of the refrigerator and Pamela’s uneven, post-orgasm breathing.
Then Frank grinned at Bruce, all teeth and mischief, and said, “Better get used to that, little man. This is how it’s gonna be.”
“Oh and cuck, go out and get us all something to eat. I know a BBQ place, Carl’s, go get us BBQ platter, it is more than enough for all of us.” Frank said, his form always a mainstay in any room, he was a mountain of a man, his large cudgel between his legs almost swinging as he stood and repeated the order harshly, “NOW! Don’t make me get my belt” Frank yelled. Pamela flinched as if the paint on the walls were to come off.
“Ok” Bruce said softly. Humiliated as he sat there in his jeans and 49ers t-shirt. Frank growled as soon as Bruce answered him and reached across with dazzling alacrity. <Smack> Frank slapped him like a pimp might slap a whore. He then barked out, “That is Sir to you. Now go and get it, make yourself useful”
Bruce sighed crestfallen, and he tried to look at Pamela who only looked down, her pale skin covered in sweat and golden blonde hair disheveled.
Bruce did not even try to look back as he walked out the front door, leaving the echo of Frank’s laughter and Pamela’s ragged breathing behind him. His keys felt brittle in his hand, and when he climbed into his Prius, the hollow slam of the car door seemed to reaffirm every secret, gnawing fear that had kept him up for the past year. The engine stuttered before turning over. Bruce sucked in a breath and tried to focus on the route, East on Oak, left on Boulder, then a slow crawl through three blocks of road construction before you even hit the highway. But he was already lost in the horror movie reel of what was happening behind him, every inch of his wife’s body mapped in his memory, every one of Frank’s humiliating grins burned into his retinas.
The BBQ joint was on the far side of the industrial park, a forty-five minute drive if the traffic gods showed mercy. Today, they did not. Bruce’s phone chirped every few minutes, each vibration in his pocket a tiny spike of panic. Were they texting him? Was there a new demand? Was it possible that Frank had already finished with her, no, with them both, and was just bored now, toying with his prey because he could? He didn’t look at his phone. He couldn’t.
He remembered the night he’d gone over to Frank’s house to settle it like a man, and what had come back wasn’t a man at all. Pamela had met him at the door, taken one look at his face, and said nothing, just pressed a dish towel full of ice to his eye socket while he sat at the kitchen table at 2am and stared at the grain of the wood. The deal she’d struck with Frank, she’d explained quietly, was the only reason he hadn’t needed the hospital. He hadn’t argued. He hadn’t been able to. But it had always been over there, at Frank’s house, something Bruce could almost convince himself wasn’t real if he didn’t look directly at it. Tonight was the first time Frank had brought it here, into their living room, onto their floor, and made Bruce watch. That was new. That was something else entirely.
He counted the stoplights until he lost track, burned by the memory of Frank’s handprint on his cheek. Sir. He’d called him Sir. The shame of it didn’t even feel hot anymore. It was cold, a sludge that crept up from the soles of his shoes and settled behind his heart.
The drive was a blur; the world seemed to recede, the landscape outside his window tinted gray and silent, even as the talk radio hosts barked on about local crime or the playoffs. All Bruce could see was the way Pamela’s knees had parted for Frank, the way she’d opened her mouth obediently with a hunger Bruce had never coaxed out of her, the way she’d looked at him, her own husband, like he was the intruder in the room.
When he finally stood inside the smoky din of Carl’s BBQ and placed his order, the counter lady flashed him an indifferent smile and asked if he wanted extra sauce. He managed a “Yes, please,” then fumbled his wallet across the counter, nearly spilling his credit cards onto the floor. He wondered if she could see it on him, the humiliation, whether some residual stain had seeped into his skin, visible only to those who already knew what to look for. He could not meet her eyes.
The hour dragged. Bruce hovered near the pickup window, breathing in the tang of vinegar and char, pretending to check sports scores on his phone. Every minute, he pictured the clock on the kitchen wall at home, the slow rotation of its red second hand, counting down the time until he had to return. What would he find? Would Pamela be in the shower, huddled on the tile, or in the laundry room, scrubbing herself raw? Or would she be waiting for him at the door, her hair wild and eyes shining with that post-Frank glow, needing only a hug and a cup of tea to reset the world?
He did not know which was worse.
The food was ready in a plastic sack slick with grease. The drive back was slower still, a parade of taillights and rainy pavement. Bruce rehearsed the script of apology in his head, then realized he had nothing to apologize for. He was following orders. He was being a good husband. He was, in every sense, doing exactly what he’d been trained to do.
When he finally pulled into the driveway, the windows of the house glowed with warm lamplight. There were two silhouettes in the living room, one muscular and slumped, the other smaller, shoulders squared as if braced for impact. Bruce sat in the car for a full minute, hands gripping the wheel, before he got out. He told himself that this time, at least, would be the last time. He told himself that next time, he would stand up to Frank, or at least look him in the eye. He told himself a lot of things.
Inside, the air was thick with the scent of sweat and whiskey and the faint musk that Bruce once would have called his wife’s perfume. Pamela was sitting on the couch, legs tucked beneath her, face shining with a kind of defiant serenity. Frank lounged beside her, legs spread wide, a king in his domain.
No one spoke as Bruce set the food on the table. Frank just grinned, and Pamela gave her husband a look, soft, complicated, unreadable. There was nothing to do but sit and eat, and pretend that anything in this house still belonged to him.
He wasn’t even a quarter way up the stairs when Frank’s voice hooked him by the scruff. “Where do you think you’re going, wimp?” The words cracked against Bruce’s back, every syllable a stinger. Bruce froze, one foot drawn mid-air, and pivoted back down. He saw Pamela on the couch, a half-eaten biscuit perched between her fingers, watching the exchange with a weird, almost academic interest, as if this were a documentary about lesser primates, filmed in their own home.
He tried, “I was just,” but Frank bulldozed straight through him with words. “If you’re too good to eat BBQ with us, I’ll give you something else to chew on.” Frank leaned back, his arms spread across the top of the couch, every inch of him the lord of this manor. Bruce stood by the entryway to the living room, arms folded tight across his chest, breathing shallow as he weighed his options, run and be chased down, or stay and be slaughtered in slow motion. He remembered an old nature show: sometimes the gazelle simply knelt down, folded its legs, and let the lion do its worst.
Pamela bit her biscuit, a dry snap. Crumbs tumbled down her lap and onto the carpet. She did not intervene, nor even avert her gaze. If she felt anything watching her husband wilt beneath another man’s command, it didn’t show on her face.
Frank let the silence stretch, his smile growing wider. “Well, Bruce? Sit.” Bruce shuffled to the armchair, lowering himself like a man about to be strapped to the electric chair. The plate of brisket and beans and hush puppies steamed on the coffee table, smelling of smoke and brown sugar and, to Bruce, a kind of shame. He picked up a plastic fork and stabbed a piece of meat, chewing without tasting. Each bite clogged his throat, like he was swallowing someone else’s life.
Frank ate with his hands, meat juice dribbling down his fingers, licking them clean after every bite. At intervals he’d clap Bruce on the back, hard enough to jostle food down the wrong pipe. “That’s how a man eats!” he’d crow. Each time, Bruce winced, the force of Frank’s touch a reminder of the earlier handprint still stinging his cheek.
The meal wore on until Frank sat back, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, and fixed Bruce with a look that made the hair on his neck stand up. “You ever been in the service, Bruce?”
Bruce shook his head. “No.”
Frank nodded with mock seriousness. “Figures. No discipline. No chain of command.” He reached over and grabbed Bruce’s forearm, squeezing until the bones ground together. “You need to learn to follow orders, son.”
Pamela, reclined on the sofa, finished her biscuit. She crossed her legs at the knee, her bare foot swinging in the space between her and Frank, like a cat’s tail when it’s curious. She said nothing, but Bruce felt her eyes on him, felt every ounce of her quiet, unhelpful appraisal.
Frank’s next words were a growl. “Stand up and strip.” For a second Bruce thought he’d misheard, but Frank smirked and said it again, slower, enunciating each word like a teacher with a dullest student: “Take. Off. Your. Clothes.”
Bruce stared at him, a sick lurch in his stomach. He looked to Pamela for rescue, but she only arched her brow, as if this was interesting, but not her problem. Frank shook his head, mock-disgusted, and rose from the couch. He was on Bruce before he could even back away, hands fisted into the collar of Bruce’s 49ers t-shirt, yanking him up and out of the armchair. The shirt ripped at the neck, a popping of threads loud in the quiet living room. Bruce flailed, an instinct, and connected with Frank’s chest, a punch that landed with all the force of a toddler’s tantrum. Frank’s eyes lit up, wolfish. “Finally,” he said, and Bruce saw, too late, that this had been what Frank wanted all along.
