Once more with bound breasts and dressed as a man, Flora rode into the edge of town leading four of the horses they wanted to sell. One was a heavily laden packhorse, its load covered by a ground cloth.

A blacksmith’s forge was just inside a group of buildings and she stopped there. When the smith paused in his cutting nails from a long wire he had drawn, she spoke, “I have four horses to trade or sell. Do you know of anyone looking where I might get a reasonable deal?”

“Those are fine-looking steeds, lad,” the smith commented, then asked “Why would you wish to sell them?”

“Not me, but my master,” she responded, shrugging. “He bought them from two women several days ago. They seemed desperate for coin, so he got a good deal. Now he wants his profit. But I was told not to fall into the same trap.”

The smith laughed, then advised kindly, “Best leave off some of that detail or your master won’t be happy with the deal you get. Let me have a look.”

He walked over to the horses and proceeded with the skilled examination of an experienced horse trader. He looked at every shoe and in every mouth. Eyes, teeth, flanks, and backs all had his attention. The smith finished and inquired, “Two were recently shod, and they are all healthy and in good shape. Did they give you any trouble on the lead?”

“No trouble at all, and I’ve ridden all of them,” Flora told him. “They are spirited, but not wild.”

The smith smelled good profit if he could buy all four before the boy found better offers deeper in town. “What would your master consider a good or reasonable deal?”

Aha, the bait was nibbled, now to set the hook, “Not less than a conch each for the three, or I’d be beaten. I think he’d be really happy with that and an extra eight quads.”

The smith set his own trap, “Let’s make your master really happy. I’ll offer four conchs for the four horses and a pinch each for the halters.”

Pretending to be astounded at this good fortune. Flora exclaimed, “Done!” Then she asked, “Is there a saddler in town that might be interested in buying some used saddles and tack? I’ll need to sell this load before I can give you the fourth.”

Realizing the lad wasn’t as naïve as he first seemed, the smith walked over, released the cords holding the load’s cover and examined the saddles and accompanying gear. “I just suppose your master got a good deal on these as well,” he muttered. “And what will keep you from a beating with this lot?”

“There are actually five well-made saddles and such. What say one conch, five quads, plus two pinches so I can have a brew and meal at an inn?” Flora laughed, “And at that price, my master won’t expect me to mention the extra pinches.”

The gear was indeed in good shape, and the smith realized that without the packhorse, the lad would be required to sell the leather goods at just about any price. He countered, “One conch, and four pinches for you.”

“He won’t be overjoyed, but it’s enough to prevent a beating. You have another deal.” Flora gladly handed over the leads for the four horses and held out her hand. The smith returned the leads, entered the enclosed back of his forge, and shortly returned with the agreed sum that Flora placed in her purse and tucked it under her vest. Once his hand was empty, the smith again took the leads and rounded his workspace to a corral in back. Flora walked with him and helped unload the packhorse.

The smith smiled and held out his hand, saying, “I’m Rusty, and I’d rather be called that than Smitty. Come. Let’s put your mount in with mine and go for lunch and a mug. If you are with me, you’ll not be charged full price, and you can save some of those pinches.”

“Gladly! My name is Jake. My master thought I’d be longer on his business and doesn’t expect me ‘til dusk.”

Rusty led to a tavern. Over the door was a rendering of a lad’s naked butt bent over a knee. He pointed at the sign and said, “Bottom’s Up has good food, better ale, and honest prices. We are early, so we might still get a pigeon pie.

They were soon seated at a table by a window and were approached by a lovely, adolescent girl, somewhat older than Flora anticipated having seen the locket’s painting. The serving wench placed a pitcher of watered wine and mugs before each of them and asked, “Good day Master Smith. You’ll be wanting the pie, but what of your friend? The stew is very good as well.”

“Jake here is under my wing, so for this visit, he’ll have the pigeon pie and watered wine for a pinch, like me.” Rusty winked and told his guest, “Angel is new, only a few days, right girl?”

Angel nodded to Jake and blushed. Rusty noticed the blush and told her, “Off with you now, and ask your master to join us.” He turned to Jake and told him, “Marcus bought her indenture from two toughs traveling through. He said they also tried to sell a young boy, but Marcus had neither the coin nor the desire to raise a boy that young. His wife died, you see, and he said he simply couldn’’t.”

Their meals arrived and Angel told them, “Master Marcus said he would try in a while, but at the nonce he was too busy getting ready for the trade.” She curtsied and left them.

Happy to have a new ear for old gossip, Rusty continued between bites, “Mind you, Marcus is a good man. He treats his indentured servants very well. Neither girls nor boys are required to submit sexually, and he allows them to keep their tips. Opens an account at the bank for them and requires them to save at least two of every three coins. He dresses them well, too. I suppose that’s at least part of the reason he couldn’t afford the boy.”

Flora paid close attention as she ate. She was already enamored by Angel and had her hopes up. She told Rusty, “It disturbs me to see younglings indentured to rough masters. I’m glad for Angel but would fear for the boy.” Keeping to her fiction, she added, “My master is somewhere in between.”

Angel returned and told them, “If there’s nothing more, you owe a pinch each.” She winked at Rusty.

Flora reached into her purse, gave her two, and turned to Rusty. “That was better than I’ve eaten in many days. Thank you. I’d best leave now. I have hours of riding before I reach our camp.”

“It has been my pleasure,” Rusty responded. “Let’s go retrieve your steed, and I’ll bid you fair travels.”

The two reached the corral, and Flora checked to see that her mount’s cinches remained tight and that Libby had satisfied her thirst from the trough. Rusty glanced around, and then told her quietly, “Mistress, you can trust me. I’ll keep your secrets. I don’t know why you want the girl, but when you return for her, I’ll help with Marcus. Like I said, he is a good man.”

When Flora started to whisper, “How...?” He interrupted, “I thought I recognized two of the horses you traded, and later I realized you were too quick to accept the fourth conch when I made the offer.” He actually blushed as he continued, “And never once did you adjust your stones. A man just would do that from time to time.”

“Thank you,” she whispered, “you are a good man. My real name is Flora, and I will be back.” She stood on tiptoe, kissed Rusty’s cheek, and ran to mount and hurry from the town to Heris, who had waited at a short distance away to escort her back to their secluded camp two hours away.

Later, when relating her tale to her partners, she told them, “If I find that man is unmarried, when this adventure is done, I’ll return and marry him!”

The logistics of their next move were not so easy to plan. A horse-load of weapons, clothing, and assorted gear must be sold or traded. They needed feed for the horses, food and assorted expendables for themselves, and several nights’ rest in a comfortable inn. Then there was the temptation of a hot bath, and finally rescuing Angélique,...”

They felt that the size and composition of their party furthered their disguise. As long as they all presented as ‘male’, attempted rape was less probable, and they appeared ready to handle most aggressions. Heris had found a place to camp in a clearing near where she had waited for Flora. Early the following morning, they all rode to Rusty’s smithy, arriving before the midday meal.

Rusty put his hammer aside and walked out to greet them with a smile. “You definitely chose the better two nags of that lot. I suppose you are keeping them?”

“Fine greeting to a friend,” Flora responded, also smiling. “You can see we are riding those. Angel will choose one of the packhorses, and the other will be traded for a mule. Do you know where we can find a good one?”

“I might,” the Smith told her, “but it might take a little discussion. Is my time worth a meal and a mug at Bottom’s Up?”

“Your company alone is worth a meal or more,” she invited. “We are planning on staying several days. Join us and be our guest for meals anytime you choose.”

Flora waved at her companions and asked, “Can Marcus care for our horses, or should we leave them in your care?”

“Either of us could,” Rusty responded, “but my brother would be a better option. Miles has a livery with a larger stable and more boys to help with grooming and such. You may also find he has a trade to offer for your spare horse, whichever it may be. He’s just down the street to my right.”

Flora finally introduced her companions and promised better courtesy when he joined them at the Bottoms Up. Heris and her remaining companions were to take their mounts to Miles’ stable.

It was still mid-morning when they dismounted. Flora stepped into the inn and asked for a large private room with two beds for four. “Two quads for the room, plus a pinch each for breakfast,” Marcus told them. “Midday and evening meals are extra but come with watered wine. A mug of ale is also extra,” he said, quoting the prices.

In response to a request for private baths and laundered clothes, he called out, “Angel, you have new duties attending these guests! They wish baths together in the private room with laundered linens and cleaned leathers. Afterwards, they will be in the larger room at the back. Have the bath water heated by mid-afternoon, and if they are delayed, keep the room private and the water hot.”

Seeing concern in her eyes and a lack of comfort being in a bath with several naked men, Flora told her, “You’ve met me before, and I can assure you that no harm nor insult will be offered to you.”

When Angel hurried away, Flora turned to Marcus and asked, “Rusty has told you of our purpose – to join brother and sister and take them in search of their widowed father?”

“He has relayed your confidences, and I’ve shared them with no one, not even Angel,” he assured her. “I had no wish to stir hope until I was certain of her safety and the honesty of your intentions. I must have some proof...”

Before his sentence could finish, Flora held out a hand with the locket, spread open to show both portraits. As Marcus examined it, Flora told him, “The mother and children were traveling without their father, so we believe he still lives. Earle is now wearing a family signet ring around his neck. That should help us, especially if Angel has any memories to also aid us.”

She became uneasy with the next statement – an offer that could insult. “If you part with Angel, there will be cost to you. I am prepared to prevent that cost by paying you thrice what you paid for her indenture – a false one I’m sure you now know. Before all, I will publicly release her from the indenture and set her free.” Flora then told him, “I’m not wealthy, but I can and will provide for both until such time as I find their father. Should I perish, my companions will assure their well-being.”

Marcus responded by saying, “I don’t wish to profit by her freedom and happiness. While I needed a wench, I chose her mostly to get her free from those two ruffians, I only wish I could have afforded the boy as well. I’ll deposit the extra conch in her account at the bank.” Marcus affirmed his acceptance of the terms, and they shook hands.

Up the street, three riders approached a stable standing out from two corrals, a hayshed, and a manure pile. When they stopped, a boy called, “Do you wish to stable your mounts? Master Miles can be with you in a moment.”

“We’ll want boarding for several nights in nice stalls, both hay and grain each day, grooming and light exercise,” Heris told Miles when he arrived. “Your brother recommended you highly,” she continued, grinning.”

“Oh thunder!” Miles replied, “I suppose he told you I’d only charge you the family rate.”

Heris was about to deny the assertion when a huge man moved from leaning on the wall with two others and approached Charlene, drawing a wicked dirk. “I like the roan. I’ll take him – give you a conch, maybe.”

“Not a chance,” Charlene growled, and backed Marty with the man following and reaching for her reins.

An arrow appeared at the base of his neck, and Heris nocked another and whirled her mount to face the other two. They raised their hands and declared, “Not our fight. Buster was stupid.”
